water sorce
    #484981 - 10/04/10 01:36 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

so i was told i had a ph problem and i was going to switch from tap water to spring water. but my wife picked up distilled water instead. im too busy with school to drive the 20 min to return it so i was like wtf i will just use it. well cence i have started to use it my 2 flowering plants are showing unhealthy signs, noticeable cence the water was switched. i have been using the distilled water for 2 weeks now and i am getting small browning spots on the bigger leaves and now moving onto the smaller but not as bad, had to pull 3-4 leaves off yesterday and now im getting concerned. like i said it hasn't started until i used the distilled water, should i switch back to spring water or go back to the tap water witch i have no control over the ph and witch has worked for my past 2 grows?

thanks for advice guys,,,

Distilled water is like rainwater and is good to use since it doesnt cause mineral build up. You might want to try and give the runoff a ph check and adjust from there

Distilled and R/O water also have very little, if any, micro nutrients.  Thus people feeding plants with distilled or R/O water often experience Mg defs along the way if they are not providing a micro nutrient additive in their food.

No control over your pH?  You know about pH up and pH down, right?  They're like 12 bucks a bottle and a liter is usually enough to last you a few years unless you grow a fuck ton of plants at a time.  That combined with a simple dropper pH testing kit and you'll have full control over the pH of your water.

no control as in i told my self if i have bad problems i would not check the water. an easy alternative for me was to just switch to spring water cos i was already buying gallons of it at a time for my family so i was like eah ill swipe a couple gallons for my plants so i thought. i was adding the fox farm tiger bloom i have to it also except every other feeding. this was started 2 weeks ago and cence then i have been starting to have this problem.

so i have switched back to the tap water to see if it improves cos it was the only change in the routine i have made.

Need to at lease ck pH of run off water.

A plant can grow in bad pH. I've done it but the high sucked.

Your logic is all wrong here man.  Don't just worry about your pH when you have problems.  No offence but that's really lazy and counter-productive to growing.  While growing in soil does create a buffer and you can get away with not pH adjusting for awhile, unless  the pH is exactly where it should be your inevitabley going to end up with problems.

If your adding nutrients that's going to change your pH.  Regardless of what kind of water you starting with.  pH testing equipment can be super cheap and easy to adjust.  Hell you can just use baking soda and lemon juice to bring it up and down.

I hate to be a dick, but dont be lazy man.  Take the 3 minutes it takes to adjust to the proper pH.

the only reason i said that was cous my first 2 grows went fine with the tap water. i got some extra cash yesterday and i am going to stop by the hydro store on my way home from school. on another note here is an updated pics of the problem.

and this is what is happening in my veg box now. is this disease or nute or water problems?

any info tonight would be nice so i can start correcting the problem tomorrow.

In over 25 years of growing under the light I have never had a problem cause of tap water. Mine is high in ph but just adjust it like you normally should be when mixing the nutrients and you should be fine. :potleaf:

I could help ya better if you fill this out.

Soil Growers:
1. Are you growing from seed or clones?
2. How old are your plants?
3. How tall are your plants?
4. What size containers are they planted in?
5. What is your soil mix?
6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use?
7. What is the pH of your water?
8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio?
9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything?
10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights")
11. How close are your lights to the plants?
12. What size is your grow space in square feet?

yea but could using distilled water do this cos like i said this is the only thing i have changed in the past 3 weeks and  i am running into this. my last 2 grows the only problem i had was claw leaf and it was not even that bad. the only reason i changed the water was cos some 1 told me i was abusing my plant with bad ph water..http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/476130 yea invertd pointed it out and said i had early onset of nute lock out cos of it. so i switched it and now im ending up with this. i knew i should have stayed with what was working but i wanted to be a good green thumb ha ha.  i am going to pick up a ph kit tomorrow and work from there. sense i switched back to the tap water it is hard to tell if it is improving.

Wow that was bad  wording on my part didn't mean to sound like I was chopping on ya for changing your water around since you were just trying to make things better for your plant. My bad.

I'm gonna suggest a complete start over. Flush out the plant with a shit ton of water (recommended amount is 3 times the amount the pot holds).  Example 1 gallon pot get flushed with 3 gallons of PH balanced water. Then start feeding again with a good solution mix and that should be a fast and effective fix to the problem.

lol its all good man no offense taken. yea i already flushed once and i just turned the lights on and it looks like it is not getting as bad now(as in no new dieing  leaves today.)i flushed 2 days ago and i am gona flush again today. my only concern now is that my plants are 1 month and 1 week into flowering and cence this started the hairs are starting to get orangish< bad grammar > i know my yield will be shot this time but its ok i learn from my mistakes. should i be concerned with this even tho the tops of the plants are still growing and filling out a bit more.i am going to throw my good clone i managed to get (3 of 4 rooted, 2 died from this problem, the 1 i am so glad i did not use that water on..) glad im growing bagseed instead of good  strain for now cence im still learning oblivious..

sorry for bad grammar but im all perked up and my wife's keyboard sucks bad....

ty for the info..

Ok, now that you have flushed just forget about the growth on the plant hairs and all just write them off. What you are concerned with it how the new growth is forming and it's health. Damage done is damage done. Like that P90X guy says in the commercial "do your best and forget the rest"

Wait for them to fall.  The reason you see necrotic/rust spots is that the plant is drawing nutrients that it needs from elements that are stored up in it's shade leaves, i.e. immobile nutrients.  As soon as the leaves come off easily you can pull them.

I would put money on that there experiencing extreme nutrient burn at the moment considering size of container and how often your fertilizing.  You probably have some salt build up in your soil to boot.

It sounds like your doing the correct thing to fix the problem, flushing them with a pH balanced water.

Keep us updated as to how it's goes from here on out.

On a second glance at what your growing in, I wouldn't be surprised if your having issues because of your soil.  MG has nutrients in it that are designed to release themselves overtime.  Since your adding nutrients and the soil itself is adding nutrients as time goes on, your overdosing on that.  Flush the shit out of your soil man.  Make sure it's pH balanced and don't add any nutrients unless it's something like Oregonism or Sub-culture.
