1.5" rockwool cubes + plant size

Hello folks,

Any advice for prepping rockwool to germinate seeds in?

Is there much benefit to pre germinate seeds before placing into rockwool to ensure the taproot is facing down? I don't know how successful either method is but I've recently had an issue of a seed germinating in a plug tray of coco and not being able to penetrate the surface and basically growing a coil of stem and dying. For this reason I want the most successful approach possible.

For clones I've soaked rockwool in pH 5.5 water with a few drops of Superthrive (~13 drops per 3gals of water).

I don't know if the same method is appropriate for germinating seeds.

Thanks all,
MA3087

Your procedure sounds good - not sure if the superthrive is beneficial I've only used distilled water. The taproot will grow whichever way gravity pulls it so no need to worry about that.

It's true that the taproot will grow down. However I've broken up jiffy pellets and my coir plugs and found that the stem elongated and curled up until exhausting the energy of the seed on several occasions.

In rockwool do you cover up the hole after dropping the seed in?
