new growth shriveling - unhealthy pot plant
    #455608 - 08/05/10 07:30 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

so my friend has this plant, and had to move it inside because her roommates didn't want it out and obvious.

before moving it inside, it had the occasional leaf turn brown and dry, but not too serious.

this is it now.

the last picture shows that it has some sort of fungus growing in the soil, is this good or bad? (i think it's fine)

we did notice some gnats today, so that may be the problem.

what's wrong?

I think if you just give it some lovin some light and proper watering she will do fine. Not sure whats the yellowing is from maybe over watering or a ph issue.

If there are gnats involved, then let it dry out between waterings.  A top layer of perlite will help control the gnats in the future.

Looks like you're trying an all organic mixture with what looks to be eggshells in your soil, which can be great but can also cause problems with contamination if you're not careful.  Furthermore, your soil has lots of non-degraded wood chips in it, which is not ideal for the plant's root structure.  You need more loamy soil, with a greater relative concentration of clay and sand along with the decomposing organic materials, in order to allow the soil to retain an appropriate amount of moisture while also providing good drainage and support for the root system.

That plant is in a pretty bad way, but it is pretty small and could perhaps benefit from a transplant into fresh potting soil.  Mind you, the transplant shock could also end up killing it since it's already pretty weak, but in my opinion given the conditions and the visible mold on your soil, I think transplant is the best choice.

If I were you, I would cut off all the dead or dying growth from the plant and leave it outside in the sun (protecting it from extreme heat at the height of the day), and let the soil lose some of its excess moisture.  Then after 1 - 2 days, I would carefully attempt to dig underneath the root ball of the plant, lifting from the bottom and placing into a new, clean pot full of fresh (pre-moistened, but not sopping wet!) potting soil from your local nursery.

How often are you watering your plant?  Where are you keeping it?  What are your typical daytime/nighttime temperatures?

Agree with geo, need to transplant to some healthier soil. Also, you said you had to move it inside, so, what type of light are you using inside? and how much is it getting? With better soil, and good light you might be able to recover.

leaving it in the sun is not an option.

You're using an incandescent bulb?  Those are the "old" style bulbs, if your bulb looks like it's twisted into a coil, then you're using a CFL style bulb.

Sounds like you're going through extreme lack of light, you should head to home depot and build yourself a small CFL array.
