Notre Dame tight end Mike Ragone and a female companion were formally charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession Wednesday at LaGrange County Circuit/Superior Court.
The misdemeanor charge carries a maximum sentence of a year in jail.
A court date has not been set.
Ragone, 22, and a 21-year-old woman were arrested Saturday after less than 30 grams of marijuana was found in the woman’s purse after Ragone was stopped for speeding on the Indiana Toll Road.
Ragone, of Laurel Springs, N.J., waived his right to remain silent and said the marijuana belonged to him and he did knowingly possess it, according to the documents.
Ragone could be suspended for a semester by the university.
Notre Dame’s student handbook says, “Possession, use or misuse of any controlled substance, including, but not limited to, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines and depressants, is a serious violation of university policy. Students who possess, use or misuse such substances shall be subject to disciplinary suspension or permanent dismissal.”
