A quick question about outdoor growing
    #385179 - 03/17/10 12:21 AM (14 years, 15 days ago)

So I would like to try my hand at outdoor growing. I really can't afford a HID lamp right now, so what I plan on doing is growing seedlings with some flouros for a week or two, then transferring the seedlings to the soil outside. Now, the vegging/flowering stages really confuse me here. In indoor growing, the plants switch from vegging to flowering when the 12/12 lighting comes on. Now, outdoors, when will these stages switch, since there going to be exposed to a 12/12 light there entire life? How long will vegging last, and then how long will flowering last? I just don't understand how and when the two switch when there exposed to the same amount of light every day.

If you want to grow outdoors, there's no reason not to start the seeds outside; if you've got money troubles, forget the flouro.

The outdoor lifecycle is the same for any seasonal flower like the sunflower. You must live directly on the equator to get 12/12 all year round? When I've started plants with less than 14 hours of light a day they turned to flower as soon as it was mature, about 4-8 weeks. It comes down to the ecosystem mother nature has given you.

If this is the case with you then you want to stick in a few plants depending on the yield you want.

Hmm, ok. Well I guess theres only one way to find out!! And Snurry what do you mean by "if you got money trouble, forget the flouros?" I'm saying I would like to grow seedlings up to a few inches with CFLs, then put those seedlings into the earth. It seems like that's what most websites and guides have been telling me?

i was just saying it's extra effort and you mentioned using flouros to raise the seedlings. you can do that in a cup of soil outside, or directly in the ground; it survive just fine with nature looking out for it.

Ahh ok. Another thing, I live on 30 acres with plenty of woods and bushes. If I plant about 5 or 10 plants throughout the property, do I have to worry about helicopters? Probably sounds like a retarded question, but I just want to make sure.

Ask any question you want; better to be safe than sorry.

You'll be fine planting 5 or 10 in a forrest area, just make sure to space them out and not in rows. Those copters cost a fuckload to run, so even if they could get one plant to show up on the radar (they only get a signature from large grouped plants) they're looking for the 1000+ busts so the can get more funding to keep doing it.

If you have no worries about people going for strolls through your property then make sure to find spots that get the most amount of light per day to get most out of your plants.

Hope it all goes well, keep us updated if you do decide to grow.

plant enough so they probably will miss one but dont make it obvious...spread them out

get a gps thing so only you can walk directly to each one

that way you can put it in some good spots

I plant in clusters of three. I have been told anything more than that and  they'll throw off heat. Personal choice though... No info to back it up.

The reason why people say to start your seeds inside is because the seed/young plant is most vulnerable to harm. But I just start seeds outdoors near my house until they are two weeks old and then plant else where
I posted the same question a while ago (I live on the west cost)Link
