So you all know I won that Galaxy Ballast, I tried plugging it in to the wall to see if it would turn on. But I dont really know what I am looking for . Is it supposed to make a noise at all? Also do I need a reflector in order for it to run? Thanks for the replies.

Wehay. Trip's starting a grow at last. Plug it in. See if the bulb lights up.

You need a bulb anyway. And a bulb holder. You wouldn't need a reflector. Though I'm fairly sure that most of the time reflectors come with bulb holders firmly attatched. Bulb holder's the thing the bulb screws into. Technically you wouldn't need a reflector. But the way they're built... you kind of do.

No, I do not. Do I need that before I'm able to turn it on?

Well you won't have a complete circuit. So no. Am I understanding you properly? You want to test a ballast without connecting a bulb to it?

Oh wait. I think I get you. You don't have a bulb or ceramic socket. But you want to see if it works. And you're wondering if it's ok to turn it without a bulb in, and will it hum signifying it's ok. Am I right so far? I'd say if you turn it on with no bulb in it, the thing will just stay quiet and no current will flow.

I seriously doubt it. Go ahead and try. It won't blow up or anything. They're built to be safe if bulbs fail or aren't screwed in properly. Or are turned on with no bulb. After all this I'm curious to know.

My ballast has indicator lights that tell you if it is functioning properly, I am guessing your model does not or you wouldn't be asking these questions. Unless your model has small fans, I don't think you are going to see or hear anything. They are like amplifiers, other than fans, they have no moving parts that I know of.
