number of CFL'S
    #33768 - 05/19/08 11:50 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

I haven't found anything regarding this. If I'm using cfl's do I need to use as many as I can fit in the box??? or is there a point where it isn't worth putting more in? just a general question...

How many plants do you intend on growing? I think you're going to want at least 100 watts for one plant (the CFL wattage, not the incandescent equivalent). More the better, definitely. Daylight bulbs for vegetative state and cool white for flowering. It'd really depend on how many plants you have and how the lights are arranged around the plants.

A better way to help decide how many bulbs is to consider how many lumens they are putting out. 4000 to 6000 lumens should keep a few to a dozen plants well for the first couple weeks while vegetating, but you're going to want at least 2000 for just a couple of plants while vegetating. You're going to want at least 2000 lumens per square foot while flowering. Once again, more is better.

Hope that helps. I'll add that this is what I've gathered from doing some research around the net and I haven't actually grown with CFL's, so hopefully someone who has can come along and be of more service.

i've used two cfl's on one plant before and it's turned out pretty well. unfortunately it died while it was flowering so i never got a chance to smoke my goods.

but yeah, sirius had good tips. just figured i'd throw in my .2cents. so i'd go more with 3 at the most for one plant. but the more the merrier i guess

It'd be hard to say the definite point at which it'd be too much, just something you'd find on your own depending on the situation, I think.

Ahh, I meant to say "soft white" for flowering. Anyways, 6500k for vegetative state and 2700k for flowering, right?

I assume that 2700k is 2700 lumens...

So I'm being told plants need less light during flowering?

No, 2700k is the color temperature of the particular lamp. You're being told that the color temperature of cfl's best suited for vegetative state is 6500k and for the flowering state is 2700k.

In other words, cool white for vegetative state and warm light for flowering.
