having a hard time deciding.
    #326182 - 12/03/09 05:16 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

My second 600W lumatek ballast just showed up, but I've only got about 3 weeks left in flowering this round. usually towards the end of flowering light levels decrease due to less daylight hours and lower angle of inclination of arriving sunlight.

should I plug both in, or wait until this round is done and just grow the fuck out of my next batch?
should I plug in the extra 600W right now, or wait until next round?
You may choose only one

I say nay to the plugging in of the light.
I don't think the daylight hours are an issue, but the position of the earth on its axis and the subsequent refraction of light as it passes through the atmosphere at a shallower angle weighs heavy in my opinion here.
I think a sudden increase in lumens and light intensity could have adverse effects in terms of finishing time and/or possible hermaphroditism.

just for the sake of conversation here are the two posts from my dumb double post thread.

Well you are right, but it's the hours that decrease, not the intensity.

If I were you, I would plug that bitch in, so that I can maximize what's left of that crop, but I would maybe cut the hours of light back to 11/13, stimulating the shortening days of autumn.

This is all personal speculation, with what knowledge of the Cannabis plant I have.

so in other words, I agree with 81Ren on this one.

Interesting.  Even with 3 weeks left?  I personally have no idea.

I'm a huge proponent of MOAR LIGHT!!!
But in this case, I think the possible negative effects outweigh the possible benefits.
Certainly you might see a slightly increased yield IF they don't herm OR begin producing more leafy vegetative material.

I say play it safe cuz your plants are beautiful, and there's always another round.

Especially if some new genetics from seed suddenly fell into your lap b/c of good karma for doing a friend a favor.

I really don't think they would herm.

What about when I took my female that was 4 weeks into flowering under only a 175w MH and I put her outside to face the sun which is stronger than a 1000w HPS... Well I'll tell you what happened, nothing but good things.  She took a few days to get over the hardening but after that she took right the fuck off in terms of budding.  I was able to get much harder and larger buds, not to mention everything sped along faster.

But you can look at it scientifically or play it by ear.  I prefer the latter.

Inverted- your plant was tough as fuck if it did not herm due to stress from wind, sun, etc.

4 Weeks into Flower

Notice the lack of size of buds after 5 weeks.  This is usually what my OD buds look like after 2...  That picture was taken when I put her outside.

Here is what adding a shitload of lighting did for me.  Just 3 weeks later.

This is the middle of summer mind you, when the sun is most intense, and not refracted.

I stand by my decision.  I'd add the light, but maybe ease it in over the course of 3 days.  Start with it off to the side, then move it closer and closer until the two lights are centered over your plants.

Want more? Use the light. The plant is not going to stress but go "fuck yeah more light". Just don't fuck with the hours.

Reading this thread i agree with 81ren's first post.  I don't think it would cause any herms though.  I just don't think that the added effort would be worth the pay off of only 3 weeks of use.  I could be wrong but that's just my inclination on the topic.  Now if you had more time until harvest I might change that opinion.

You know, when presented with new situations, I have a tendency to overthink them.

Do you do that too Harry?

Naw naw....the plants can do some major swelling in the last few weeks. The buds may not look like they are growing larger but they are "hardening" so to say. They can actually gain some major weight at this time. Remember when you are flushing the plants the nutrients stored have to be used by the plant and this is what they do with them.

DID ANY OF YOU LOOK AT WHAT MY PLANT DID IN 3 WEEKS?

I see your argument but look at what increasing the lighting does!

Magash is so right.  Most of the swelling and bud mass is achieved in the last 3 weeks.  That's where I noticed my buds gain all the weight and stems start to sag.

IMO it's never really too late in the grow cycle to improve on ones grow...
