brown spots under and on top of leaves
    #315669 - 11/14/09 09:56 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

ok a few days ago swims plants developed these brown spots that eventually spread and got worse, drying out and deadening leaves. my new leaves are starting to follow suit and swim needs to figure something out quick before they die.

so swim tested the water (using tap water(terrible)it turns out its very hard, high pH, alkaline as fuck, nitrate levels high. for this, swim is  thinking about replacing the water with r-o water and adjusting from there. Thing is, swim doesnt know the exact nature of whats happening to swims plants. he hopes you can help, as he is desperate for a cure.

the plants are growing on a homemade hydro-kit with a 4 gallon reservoir with a pump with hoses feeding 4 plants in net pots with hydroton clay dirt balls and the plants in a porous dirt-like medium.

since last changing tap water and supplementing nutrients (humbolt nutrient's Oneness 4 teaspoons) swim has noticed the water became very cloudy but thinks the water aereators blowing into the net pots may have just made dirt fall off the hydroton.

the plants are 2 weeks old from seedlings and have grown super-fast with the conditions here are pictures :

thats the devastation.. and some of my set-up. what do you think is wrong with these plants given the information?

What's your PPM at??  Can you see the roots???  Do they look nice and white/healthy??

Yes hydroton can put some dust into the water in a hydro system, it's inert though so shouldn't really cause any problems.  What kind of cloudiness are you seeing?  Is it red tinged??  White??  More info on that would be helpful.

And lastly, what was the exact pH reading?

My guess is that since your pH was so high your plants were not getting proper absorption of nutrients.  Ending in a deficiency.  Your best bet is to get your pH under control.

1.nitrate (no3) 60ppm safe
nitrite (no2) 5.0ppm danger
total hardness 300 ppm very hard
total alkalinity 100 ppm ideal
ph level 6.0 to 6.5 low
(with quick drip pond test kit)

roots are white, present and healthy with much growth.

2. a white cloudiness thats clearing as swim stabilizes the ph.he wonders if the salad vinegar hes using as a ph buffer for acidity is safe for the plants?

3. swims using test strips so accuracy could be off, ph level 6.0.
