 sound absorbency: are NRCs all you need?

In researching how to make a cheap, efficient sound baffle for my exhaust system, I came across the NRC rating of sound absorbency. It seems to be an OK indicator of how much sound will be absorbed, but not the only factor involved. I wanted to discuss with anyone knowledgeable/interested the merits (if any) of using commercial (expensive) "soundproofing" materials instead of a (cheaper) 4" layer of fiberglass insulation. All I can think of are the following:
-commercial products are thinner than 4", saving space
-fiberglass sucks to work with
However, from my (limited) research, >4" fiberglass insulation can have a higher NRC rating (.9) than many commercial products (.6-.8).
It feels like I'm missing something here. Why would anyone pay more for inferior soundproofing products over cheap insulation? Is it just the thickness factor, or is there some reflective factor that's important in recording, etc?
(I don't think this belongs in any of the cultivation forums, since I'd like to discuss the physics of sound absorbency specifically, not cab design.)
