yellownotepad's second grow - adding a second room!
#206937 - 03/19/09 10:53 AM (15 years, 1 month ago) |
|
|
so i'm starting up my second grow, with new genes and new equip. if you saw my last grow, i did all handwatered coco coir. this new one is a big mix. i'm putting in a 2x4ft ebb and flow table with a 40 gal res, a 4-bucket biobucket system (5gal buckets running recirculating DWC) with a 32 gal res, and lots more handwatered 2.5 gal pots of straight coco coir. going to be feeding the two hydro system gh floranova, and will be sticking with the method i finished the last grow with - h3ad's formula*.
genetics this round are - -san fernando valley sour diesel cuts (currently 2x) -san francisco gdp cuts (currently 1x) -my own super silver haze clone line (currently 4x) -a local super silver haze clone line (currently 16x) -cinderella 99 (currently 1x) -critical mass (currently 1x)
right now i'm constructing my second room, and vegging in the closet under my 600w hps. the new room is a freestanding frame built out of lumber - 5ft x 6ft 3in, 7ft tall. hanging a 600w inside there, and it will be connected to my closet (door removed) to form a sort of marijuana suite. the frame is semi-complete right now, i'll be finishing it later today. the vertical legs are 4"x4" lumber, and the rest of the frame is 2"x4". i'll post pictures when the frame is fully assembled. i'm going to double-wall it, stapling 3.5mil black plastic to the outside, and panda film to the inside of the frame.
lighting on this grow show will be two identical setups: 600w digital ballast (galaxy), yield master II air cooled hood with 6" flanges, and hortilux super hps bulb. i added a can50 carbon filter this time around (no more stinky house!), and will be sticking with my single 6" vortex pushing through both lights and out into the attic. i'm going to add some regular fans to push air around in my rooms this time, and will consider adding something to aid intake (maybe a duct booster).
more pics and rambling when i think of it!
*h3ad, aka gratefulh3ad (sp?) is a user over on icmag who developed the formula as follows (for daily feeding, no periodic flushing)- 6ml gh flora micro + 9ml gh flora bloom per gallon for veg and the first half of flower, 9ml gh flora bloom only beginning at last half of flower, and dropping bloom for the flush. you will find slight tweaks of the method and some debate, but this is my interpretation of it.

got the new flower room built last night and encountered my first major issue. the thing takes up a majority of my bedroom which isnt a problem, but my 6" vortex running all night (24hr veg) is LOUD. its like im sleeping next to a jet engine.
will upload pics later today

can't dial speed down, need max cfm. its a 6" vortex pulling through a can 50 and pushing through two 600w hoods into the attic. going to have to try and dampen / muffle the noise.

You might still want to consider it, dialing the fan down will reduce the noise level far more than it will reduce airflow. If even a bit of speed control isn't an option, try insulated ducting, suspending the fan with bungie-cords, and building the fan into a box lined with fireproof insulation. A duct muffler may help at the end of your exhaust but I don't really think so as the sound problem is close to you, not in the attic.

status on the plants:
the 12 SSH i have in the table are doing well, i topped/pruned them in order to get all the plants to the same size, and ended up throwing 6 cuts into the cloner. the res now has about 400ppm floranova grow, will ramp up over the next week or so.
in coir i have my GDP from san fran, the hairy sfv sour d cut, and local cuts of C99 and critical mass. the sour d and c99 are pretty lanky, and the critical mass is going slightly slower than the others. the GDP is my favorite so far, its bushing out like CRAZY. awesome compact growth with loads and loads of lower shooots begging to be thrown into teh cloner.
in the cloner - 4 of my own ssh line, 6 of the local ssh, 1 of the sfg sour d. going to add more cuts in pretty soon.
currently just vegging under the single 600w, will hang the other one in the next few days.
got a tds pen yesterday, its awesome! but i discovered my tap water is sitting at 580ppm out the faucet :-(
pics coming soon.

oh my jesus god i just tweeked my shoulder while trying to hang the second light. i think i need to add center beams to be able to get the lights to hang right, right now they both are hung by hooks on the frame and i messed my shoulder up trying to hang them right. and killed 2 of my ssh in the process....baahhh

so the room is up and running, vegging on 24/0 right now. room temps are sitting at 81-83*F and 45%rh (temps vary due to house thermostat). the 2x4 table in the pics is all SSH in hydroton.
i'm not sure whether to switch the setup there, right now the netpots hang into the water about 1" when the table is flooded (every 2 hours). the roots dont seem to be growing outside the pots very much.... i didnt take a pic but here's a diagram
should i set the netpots into bigger pots of hydroton to give the roots something to hide inside / grow around?
half the room will be the 2x4 table with hydroton and gh flora nutes using the lucas formula. a screen will be going over this to occupy half the room. the other half will be all handwatered coco in the h3ad formula, again a scrog. i am not so much testing yields as i am which is easier to manage. right now i have gdp, sour d, c99, and critical mass in 8" pots of coco. i just threw a bunch of cuts of everything plus the two different ssh clone lines im running. will drop them wherever i see fit. scrog will go up once we get closer to flower time. i figure when this next set of cuts roots up, i'll transplant them and once they've caught up begin scrogging. once the main room goes into flower i'll stash cuts of all the strains into my closet in pots of ocean forest to keep as mothers for next run.

Yep, also watching. Question...what would be the outcome if someone were to use fertilizer (for soil) for hydroponics, rather than using hydroponic nutrients?

well an update on the newly constructed room:
its LOUD. i'm noticing i don't sleep as well with the fan running at night since the only thing between me and the 6" vortex is a couple layers of heavy duty plastic. the other issue is my cat loves to climb the plastic. i put layers on inside and outside so the damage isnt an issue, but the noise of a cat climbing a tarp while you're trying to sleep is nontrivial.
i'm considering beefing the frame up some and just drywalling it out, would be cheap enough to be worth it. if i do, i'll put some more supports in the frame, add more vertical studs like a regular wall, and hang up 5/8" sheetrock on both sides of the frame. if i do that i'll probably hang a regular door on teh room, cut proper intakes and put a/c register covers over them, and maybe even put new circuits in (20 amp anybody?).
i'm gonna rearrange my furniture in my room as soon as i'm feeling abmitious, to see if i can max out the flower room size a little more before i commit to making real walls out of it.
on the plant side of things: the table of SSH is getting pretty overgrown. i'm going to work out a way to use my closet to veg the plants in coco, and hold the cloner, so i can throw the table of ssh into flower now.

its been a while since i updated this. pic below is the scrog of super silver haze, now flowering since may 20 (so currently 19 days into flowering). C99 has basically died, for reasons unknown. it vegged like crap so i am not too upset about losing the line anyway, i think the clone vendor may have not selected the phenotype they should have. GDP is doing well, it currently has a bit of mushrooms growing out of its coir (not cubensis )
in the res for the SSH: about 650ppm of lucas formula, 10ml/gal CES uncle john's formula (potassium booster), 10ml/gal CES plant amp (calcium booster), 10ml/gal AN B-52 (B vitamins, humic acid, etc).

c99 grows fast and heavy FYI. also it's heavily inbred so it has next to no genetic variation although there are phenotypes they wouldn't mean shit to a grower. From the c99 grows I've seen 95% will grow uniformly. C99 is definately a good cropping strain so I hope you don't look away from it. Some of my friends ran it outdoor up here in Canada during a humid summer and where I live it gets disgustingly humid.. so it would also seem it has extremely good mold resistance.

update - 41 days into flower (this line is supposed to finish in 80-85 days). buds are there, havent begun to pack on the weight yet. i'm figuring out how to solve my shitty tap water issue, since its still at ph 8.0 / 560ppm and i'm worried its gonna hurt my yields if i keep using it. gonna switch to r/o asap.
anyone got an idea how much this should pull (remember, the pic below is 29 days in, out of 80-85 total)? i had a thread asking the question adn got no good answer.

YNP: High pH tap water isn't necessarily a terrible thing; different nutrients have different solubilities throughout the pH scale, so using something like organic lemon juice (a little goes a long way in lowering pH) would lower the pH to something around, say, 6.2 and then the pH will gradually climb from there until your next watering/feeding. Your plants will actually have access to more nutes, and be healthier than if you just had a single "dialed in" pH.

one thing you can try for noise reduction is a box around the fan body...lined with some type of insulating material...since the vortex inline fans have the motor inside the airstream, they are cooled by the airflow through the fan and not by the outside air...so you dont have to worry about overheating...
Another thing you can do is a duct muffler...but the ones that are made to not restrict airflow are not very effective...
think of the muffler as a smaller tube in a bigger tube...the smaller tube is where the air comes in on one end....the smaller tube is capped off at the other end...and a bunch of small holes are drilled into the sides of the smaller tube...this allows the air to flow out of these small holes into the bigger tube...where it exits the muffler on the opposite side of the assembly from where it entered...this is even more effective if the tubes are lined with a sound absorbent material...this basically allows the air to move through this maze of holes but reduces the amount of noise that can get through the holes and somehow bounce its way out of the exit...greatly reducing the noise level...I have plans for doing this with my new grow setup...but i wont be able to do it for a few weeks...ill be posting a thread on it...
good luck dude, ill be keeping an eye on this grow agmotes165

That is a better scale reference. I would say at least an elbow+ maybe a QP or so.
Either way, that shit is looking FUKKING SWEET!!!
