Getting started.
    #203701 - 03/06/09 05:21 PM (15 years, 25 days ago)

Hi Guys,

Came over from the shroomery, and I am just now getting started in the arts! I just thought I'd post this and say hi,

I got a professional buddy who will be helping me out and providing me with clones. We're going over building a little personal setup. Nothing big.

Strictly hydro.

I have a big concern. In the summer months I usually get mushroom gnats. Although it'll be in a different room, i'm sure they'll make their way in there. I just didn't know if anyone had experience with this?

I know they will want to thrive on organic nutrients such as bat guano, but I will most likely be using all chemical uppers and downers.

let me know, or just post to say Hi, you might be seeing me around a bit more.

:wink::thumbup:

Try hanging no pest strips and spraying with garden safe 3 in 1. You can pick it up a the home depot. It is $4.99 a bottle.

Welcome by the way. There is some good knowledge when they come around.

Sticky Fly strips
That's IS the only way I keep the numbers down to a manageable size.

Thanks! The clones are BOMB by the way!

Has anybody tried Rosenthal's spray? I saw it on a vendors site. I'm thinking about getting some. I do like garden safe products. They even seem to work fine with Lophophora williamsii and cacti seedlings.

Good to see you over here Oatman! I'm just starting out over here too. Going hydro as well. Was gonna do in the same room as my greenhouse don't know if that will work. I think I can manage it though.

I will not, and here's my reasons. I run a heater to keep my room around 77F

I will most likey be needing to run an AC unit with the new stuff that's why i'll be using a seperate room. We'll see how things go.

Getting my head full before we start things. What's the max number of plants a 1000 HPS will grow? Like a square footage?

A 4ft x 4ft area will give you about 50 watts per square ft. You could go little larger with a light mover. Depending on your setup you could do as many as 4 per square foot or 64 plants. They'd have to be pretty small or they'll get crowded.

WAY TOO MANY FOR ME!!!

Considering light and ballast are free, I should take it, but I wouldn't need all 1000w

Yeah but asked for max. I probably wouldn't do that. 16 or one per square foot in like 3 or five gallon buckets would be a good possibility.

Ya, I would say that with a 1000 watter, in a 4x4 space, with hydro gear, you can accomodate 10 plants with enough room to have them big and lush, and oh yes, very budifull indeed:). 1 gallon pots is all thats needed, anything bigger and you won't fit them all.

600W for a 4x4' is fine.

You should aim at 3 gallon pots. 1 gallon pots aren't going to cut it. Anyway, the pot size is more about depth than width.

This is true, 3 gallon over 1 gallon is a good choice when you plan on growing out your babies to heights of 3' plus. I always kept them around that 3 foot mark the best I could mostly due to room constraints. But did not hinder the quality or rate of growth doing them out of 1 gallon pots using soil. Never had a problem with root bind. But if you want peice of mind, go for the 3 gallon, and yes depth is more important than width so look for pots that are taller than wide ofcourse:D,

A 600 watt would be fine, but if you can get the ballast and bulb for a 1000 free, then by all means do that! That will save you 140 bucks. You just need to make sure you vent the heat a little more than a 600. No biggee.

The general for pots is that you need one gallon per month of growth. 3 months=3 gallon pot.

Interesting information.

I still am not sure of what setup, but he has it down to an exact science, similar to me doing mushrooms. I am not worried but will let you know the routes I take.

My only concerns will be pests. I live in a super old house, and they all seem to get in one way or another.

Hell! I ended up bringing in a whole bag full of bull weavels in a bag of birdseed from Pet Smart. I still find those little bastards around, and can't believe they all haven't died yet!!!

I got to see the setup in plan. Cool stuff.
It's a mixture between a Recovery Drip System and a N.F.T.

I gotta say a lot can be accomplished with such minimal effort. It was some corigated sheet metal slanted, with nutrient pots sitting atop rockwool slabs.
So technically it's a wick type system as well.

A pump pumps water down the aluminum on the roots, as well as dripheads. It all gets recycled. very impressive.

What's your thoughts?

I can't say a lot about hydro, but Ebb & Flow is a standard. I think it is going to be more reliable.
