What next for this sapling (NEW UPDATE May 19th with pics)
    #16942 -

This is a new project for me, I normally only grow shrooms, but a freind gave me a tonne of seeds so I thought I would take advantage of the Blazing Spanish sunshine and grow only my balcony, as it is pretty much legal here.

I started with just some basic substrate, but I think it's now time to transplant to a bigger pot. I have the following materials available to me, and would like so advice on what to use.

composted horse manure
vermiculite
perlite
universal substrate
coco coir
coffee grounds

Which of these are useful, and in what balance should I use them?

UPDATE!

As you can see she is doing well. I bought some nutes for her (cellmax bio-organuc grow) and transplanted her into a bigger pot.

NEW UPDATE!

I think things are looking OK.

She is in a bigger pot and seems t0o be enjoying the nutes.

coco coir, perlite, and vermiculite. Go to the hydro forum and read hankys coco growers thread. You'll need to buy some nutrients but out of the mediums you just listed, coco is the way to go.

it looks like the plant is in a good potting mix that it likes very much

perhaps you should simply transfer it to a larger pot with more of the same

It is about a month old. It just sits on my balcony, I give it a water every 2 days and a spray twice a day (maybe not neccessary, but its just a habit I picked up from growing mushrooms!).

agreed!

has it been outside since seed?
what strain? if you said im sorry for being blind.

she likes soil. keep her in soil. get a bigger pot. fill it with your soil and perlite(some verm if you want) and just dig out a hole in the center the same size as the pot that its in. flip it over(the roots should keep the soil ball intact. then flip it into the hole in the big pot. fill in the spaces. WALLA!

nothin to it.

buy some nutes for her too

Dont spray her while she has sun on her, shes not a mushroom, and water on leaves is not good for plants during sunny periods. Its kind of like a magnifying glass on an ant.

i prefer to tie down rather than trim, you keep the plant whole while still increasing branching.

Thanks for the help. When you say within a few days the plant will be growing upright again does this mean from the apex of the curve you create by bending it over?

Does the 'old' top of the plant stop growing or will it continue to grow towards the ground?

Thanks in advance.

Re: What next for this sapling (UPDATED with pics) [Re: bwoy]
    #33675 -

yes, the plant will turn upwards from the bend to seek out the sunlight again. branching increases because of the temporary loss of sunlight to the upper leaves, the plant "thinks" it has been topped. the top will continue to grow and produce your nice main cola, which you would lose via topping.

It is also a good way to maximize surface area and light exposure, which means faster growth.

That's great! Thanks. So if I tie some string just under the top of the plant, and tie it slightly just under the bottom leaves I'm golden? Just measured her: 37cm. Good time to tie or should I wait a week?

Re: What next for this sapling (UPDATED with pics) [Re: bwoy]
    #33694 -

yup

37cm sounds like a good place to start.  you can do this multiple times as it reaches new heights.  i do it to the branches when they are big enough too, except it's more of a pulling and spreading out than bending down.

by bending the stem around you should get a good idea of how much further it would take to snap.  use this as a guide to how far you pull her down.  even if the stem collapses and "folds," the plant will be fine after a week or so, and will actually make a cool wooden knot around the break.  I've accidentally split stems right in two, with a visible hole clean through, and the plant went right on growing on.  some people do this on purpose to make fatter stems that they believe increases water transport, but i wouldn't go that far unless i have a fair number to experiment on.

post pics when you've gone through with it! :gethigh:

i found some old pics from 2003 of a plant i tied down. you can see some of the strings if you look close.

you can see the main stem on the left. the rest are branches trained into a SOG
