I have been happy with my HP. I did have problems with my first notebook but their customer service is pretty good and they ended up giving me a brand new one for free and I havent had any problems with the new one
I have heard good things about Acer also

acer is a value brand, just remember that they're items are also value, and value does not always mean quality. For a good price & computer, get an HP hands down. Vaio's are cool, or the Toshiba Satellites. Toshiba = Good brand.
