Beginner Questions Here
    #137633 - 10/28/08 08:08 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Hi, I've recently been interested in doing a little bit of cultivating.  I have a 12 pack of those jiffy pellets (with a little 'greenhouse' cover) that I've had germinated seeds in for 2 days.  4 of them began to sprout today, but I have a problem.  I don't currently have an hps light (or even fluorescent yet) or a timer.  I'm using a simple 40watt light bulb.

I've been reading and watching some Jorge Cervantes movie, and I was just making sure that I should be in the 18/6 cycle.  I'm pretty positive, as this would be the beginning of vegetative growth.

Also, would this light be sufficient for about a week?  They just sprouted beyond the soil today.  It's going to be hard to wake up and turn my light on/off, though. :tongue2: Anyway, thanks for any help.

Your plants should be in the 18/6 or 24/0 light cycle. If you go with 24/0 you will probably see better growth and not have to worry about a timer until you start flowering. An incandescent bulb doesn't put out very much light and even less in the correct spectrum, this will probably lead to some serious stretching from the plants looking for light. CFL are available for pretty cheap at most super markets, 2 32w CFL will work much better. The color spectrum also makes a difference, you probably want one that is 6500K for vegetative growth and 2700k for flowering. It should be listed on the package as heat range.

If that isn't an option I would put them near the window or take them outside for a few hours a day. also after they sprout you will probably want to take the green house top off so they can breath.

Yao,

My plants began sprouting before I had purchased my HPS light, so I went out and purchased 2 23w CFL lights and two cheap reflectors.  Cost me about $60 for everything, though I bought the larger reflectors - they have smaller ones for cheaper.

Plants were looking GREAT using these lights and I had solid growth and healthy leaves every day.  Ditch the incandescents and get two 23watters as Amnesiac said.

24 hours of light per day would be much easier for me, so I'll do that.

Yeah, they're already stretching (I was wondering why they're so tall already).  It'll be tomorrow at the earliest that I can go get a light.

That's a pretty nice setup for that cheap.  Would a fluorescent light work for the next couple of days until I get a CFL lamp?  Thanks for the spectrum info, amnesiac.

A fluorescent light should work just fine until you get your CFLs, just try to keep it really close(2"-3")to the plants. Good luck with your grow man!

Alright, thanks.  Would a blacklight in the room possibly help with the spectrum?

Yeah, it's my first time trying, and I have no idea what I'm doing. :bigjoint:  I've been researching and watching videos, but there's a ton of information out there to go through.

Just bumping the blacklight question.

Also, is there anything I should be doing right now?  They're watered, there's a fan on them (I heard it strengthens the stem), and there's light on them.

Should I be misting them periodically or anything?

I don't think a black light would really help with growth. Here is a link to a forum that goes a little more in depth on it. Some people like to folar feed the plants but, if you don't put something on the leaves/in the water to keep it from forming droplets on the leaves, it will act as a magnifying glass and burn the leaves. A fan helps keep temps from going up right under the lights and promote stronger stem growth, which is good when your plants are weighted down with buds.

Would a 4 foot 34w Fluorescent tubes be as good as CFLs?

4ft tubes work fine but cfls produce the  light from a smaller source allowing you to utilize them more effectively.
