Need some insight on Pollinating.
    #118572 - 09/05/08 01:34 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

ive never done this b4.

and a friend of mine needs a lil help and reassurance.

he happened to give away all the seeds he had to some pretty superb strains, so now he needs to get some back.

i worry that he'll pollinate his whole crop, sooo...

he has a PPP and Sherazade fem.

and a Sher and "Special" male.

he wants a branch on EACH fem, to be pollinated with one of each male.

so two branches on each fem will be pollinated, each with different genetics.(this will work yes?)

also, the males are being kept in a greenhouse where wind does not move air out of (i hope not anyway) to get the pollen to the fems.

ive always destroyed males. immediately. but he wants seeds, and i dont have the advice to give.

can he swab ONE pollen sack with a Qtip as soon as it pops? should he use immidiately? the fems are flowering, just started last week. or should he freeze and wait?

I dont want to be the reason he gets a seedy ass plant.

so help me out here PLZ

ALOHA

what ive seen is people put a clear bag over the bud that you want to seed, shoot pollen in the bag with an eyedropper and then tie it off loosely around the stem.  maybe shake it up a little bit and take it off in a couple days

and yes you can pollenate a female with more than one strain of pollen on different buds

It should be as simple as just collecting the pollen and applying it as you mentioned. I think you need to bag the branch up for a little while though, so the pollen doesn't get blown around. Watch out for winds!

see thats what im worried about. the wind taking pollen from where ive applied, and it doing it motherly thing and impregnating the rest of the plant

You'd definitely want to wait for a day that isn't windy. I think your best bet would be to collect the pollen, say with a folded piece of paper, fold it up really well, and put it inside a clear, plastic bag so you can see what's going on in there. Put the female branch inside the plastic bag and really seal the ends the best that you can, so the pollen doesn't leak out. Unfold the paper with your fingers from outside the plastic bag, get it so all that pollen can float about, and shake the branch. Come back a couple hours later, shake it again, and remove the bag some hours after that, probably bringing a spray bottle to start spraying around the ends of the bag as you remove it to kill any pollen that might float out. Spray the branch as well to neutralize any of the unused pollen.

Something like that makes sense to me, although I haven't actually done this or anything.

Also, the females should probably be a couple weeks into flower to increase your chances of pollination, but I'm sure if the pistils are developed, it should work.

Water. Water is anathema to pollen, from what I've gathered.

They release pollen, but the pollen may or may not be sterile. Seeds from hermies are going to be hermies though, although there are ways you can force a plant to reverse sex, in order to create female seeds.

but i dont have hermies...as far as i know.

and my males or females didnt come from hermies.

theres a chance that all my seeds produced will all be hermies? is that whatcha sayin?

No, I was responding to Dizz's post, in which he was asking about hermies producing pollen. It didn't have anything to do with your plants.

According to The Secret Life of Plants, any non self polinating plant requires a seperate fertilization for each seed even. So this seems very sound. However I wa reading a book that was talking about breeding with hermies and how it is supposedly a technique to create feminized seeds.

This only works if the plant was female and was stressed into reversing sex. If it was a true hermaphrodite or a strain prone to going hermie due to light environmental stress, the seeds will just be hermies as well.

From what I've read, land race Thai varieties have a tendency to go hermie. However it seems like in certain crosses that trait has been eliminated. I would think that if this was next to impossible then people wouldn't breed with it. Apparently at least Blue Velvet, California Orange , Flo, Jacks Cleaner, Juicy Fruit, Northern Lights, Northern Lights #2, Trainwreck, and Uber Candy Haze, are varieties containing some Thai genetics. I pulled that list from here:
http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=12330
And I read that Thai land races have that issue here if I'm not mistaken:
http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=36181&highlight=sativa
I'll try to go back by the bookstore and see if they have the book that I was reading still. Then I can quote it more precisely. However the author was talking about doing something besides what you mentioned when breeding I'm pretty sure. I'm not saying he's right over you. I have no real experience in this to contest your word. I'm just stating what I've read.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make... is it about breeding lines that won't hermie with plants land-race sativas, that are susceptible to going hermie, or about a way of producing feminized seeds?

Both actually, I brought up the land races because it seems like maybe that tendency can be bred out. However I guess what they probably did is selected for the few plants that didn't do this. I wonder if hermie plants were themselves ever involved. Then I was just responding to what you said here:

"This only works if the plant was female and was stressed into reversing sex. If it was a true hermaphrodite or a strain prone to going hermie due to light environmental stress, the seeds will just be hermies as well."

and like I said I'm a little fuzzy on what the actual wording was in the book I was thinking of. However I don't know that they really made a distinction between the two types of hermies either... I think I read that wrong last night. At any rate though, over successive generations this couldn't be eliminated? How well does a hermie self pollinate? How much room is there for foreign pollen? Obviously some of the pistels are going to be fertilized by it's own pollen, but it seems like nature would allow for some outside material to get in to ensure genetic variability. Sorry to not be more clear. I haven't been getting enough sleep as of late so my head's a bit foggy.

From what I've read, it seems that you need to select for females which are resistant to stress-induced hermaphroditism. Using two of these females, you spray some sort of hormone (Cervantes is unclear but it may be AVG or a gibberellin) onto one of the females to induce staminate characteristics and pollen production. Then, use it to pollinate the other female and harvest the seeds, which are supposedly truly "feminized".
