using other plants to mask the smell?
    #114752 - 08/26/08 08:02 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

i am going to assume that pot is the stinkiest plant.....BUT i need to ask anyway.

if i had a long box and only wanted a couple plants in it, and the rest of the box was free to grow other plants.....are there some VERY strong smelling plants (herbs?) that could at least help mask the smell?  i am trying to avoid filters.  i was thinking mint, but they dont smell too much until you brush against them or break them.

is this a stupid idea?  or a possible one?

are you talking about indoor cultivation?  I can't really think of too many plants that would mask the odor of cannabis.  If you wanted to you could cultivate some stinkhorns in your house and deal with that smell

LOL!!!

but seriously, is it not really feasible?  what about growing something like chocolate mint right by a fan intake(in the box)?

indoor cultivation, in a box

Agreed, that's the only thing that would come close to masking the smell.

ozone gens are fine to put in your exhaust

I wouldn't want ozone in my grow area where I can breathe it.

If you know how to use an ozone generator properly, there's no real risk to the health of oneself or one's plants.

Also having plants growing near your exhaust like herbs wouldn't be a bad idea if there happens to be any smell. (carbon getting old or whatever)

just throw in an easy bake oven and some old barber hair and you'll get rid of the smell in no time.

Funny you mention that. When I was just getting started on my first grow I tried rescuing some basil plants I found wilting at the store. Before I brought them home the smell of MJ was definitely present, after I placed them in my veg closet all I could smell was basil.

Ozone gens are very safe. If you are that worried then shut it off 30 minutes before entering your grow area. Ozone is unstable and will break down within 30 minutes.

blah blah blah, I'll cite my sources;

The International Chemical Safety Card lists Ozone classifiable as a human carcinogen from levels of .06ppm on up.

Quote:

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is irritating to the eyes and the respiratory tract Inhalation of the gas may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Inhalation of tha gas may cause asthma-like reactions. The liquid may cause frostbite. The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system , resulting in headache and impaired vigilance and performance.

http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/ipcsneng/neng0068.html

Additionally, the the Uvonair brand O3 generator (one of the cheapest and most common in cannabis grows) says; "concentrations of .1ppm should be sufficient to kill most airborne odors"

In other words, read my first post.

First off, the cultivation forums are not for calling other posters retards. Its childish and needs to be kept to the Smoke Lounge. It won't be tolerated here.

Secondly, ozone generators are safe if they are used in an appropriate manner, as they are intended to be used. HPS lights are unsafe if you stand and stare at the bulb for hours on end, but they aren't intended to be used in that manner. No one has denied that generating ozone can be a health risk, but if you use them safely, they aren't.

sorry mom :frown:

But the fact of the matter is, most stoners barely even know what O3 is, let alone how to utilize it properly.
I've been in america long enough to have noticed most people don't give a shit about safety precautions

Koons- don't just quote people for the hell of it or I'll think up a name for you too

But sirius, the argument that people are morons is only half the issue. The fact that the RECOMMENDED MINIMUM O3 levels are double the safety recommendation is what's I'm driving at. It's not just that the morons will hurt themselves, but even the intelligent people who follow directions will too.

The only people it's NOT dangerous for are people who do their own research, which is clearly a minority of the population (I'm looking at you koons)

I did some more reading on this, some stuff put out by the EPA, and it definitely does seem that a lot of the claims by the companies producing them are shifty, and there is a lot of potential for the "use as intended" recommendations that come with them to still expose someone to unhealthy conditions. I think I was getting ozone generators and negative ion generators confused. Anyways, if you do know how to use ozone generators, it shouldn't be a problem, but even the stuff that comes with them on how to use them can still fuck you up, not to mention that the claims about their capabilities for eliminating indoor air pollution seem to be pretty hyped up, so it might just be better to go with negative ion generators, used in conjunction with good, old fashioned carbon filtration.

Thanks for sticking to making that point, man. :super:

Great question; I'd rather end up having to use a smaller light while on a budget than to cheap out on odor control, if it is a security concern in that situation, and skimp on one's freedom.
