Androcell’s 2025 Spring Grow

Starting early this year so I don’t have flowering plants into the winter. Also my buddy gave me some seeds to get started for his outdoors setup, so earlier is better there too.
I’m going to use the paper towel method again since that gives me the most success so far. For myself: 2 each of AK-47, Bubblegum, and Gold Leaf.
For my friend: 3 of each type of Inzane and Mint Smash

All of the seeds germinated except 1 mint smash. That was from bag seed so I’m not too concerned, I’ll try germinating another… one plant a day or two behind is better than one less plant entirely.
I have the seeds in their solo cups with their humidity domes, 45% light strength at 18h

All of the seedlings have sprouted from the soil now, including the one that was germinated later than the rest

Cotyledons are starting to die, so I bumped light up to 65% and started preparing fertilizer for the next watering. Here’s the 25% mixture I alternated last year for reference, I may do the same since it worked well.
Blend A: 3/4tsp Neptune’s Harvest 1tbsp Big Bloom 3/4tsp Grow Big 1/2tsp Kangaroots Around 30 drops ph up
Blend B: 1tbsp Big Bloom 3/4tsp Grow Big 1/2tsp Microbe Brew Around 25 drops ph up

I topped all of my plants to the third node after seeing the fifth node start to come in. These are all seeds ordered from a seed website.
None of the plants I’m starting for my friend have reached that point yet, and they are still a fraction of the size. Note that these seeds are picked out of bud from a medical dispensary, not just “bag seed” from the street even though I’ve been calling them bag seeds.
Exact same conditions for all the plants, so maybe genetics. I’m not sure if that implies anything about the quality of genetics of dispensary buds… but that along with the cost savings and recent recall warnings from my local dispensaries, I’m glad I can legally grow my own supply of medicine.

When is the best time to "top"? ... I just topped my two 6" seedlings right above the 5th node .. nervous as hell to do it tho. It's been years since I've plucked a top... I don't cut mine.

For the first topping, I waited until there were 5 nodes, then topped above the third. The idea is to let the plant have a good head start in growth, and train the bottom of the plant to be a solid base.
Here’s a before and after from last year, and the reference I used on how to count nodes. One thing I did different this year is not trimming off all the leaves (compare the mint smash above to this example), whichever you decide to do just make sure to trim off the new shoots growing out on the lower two nodes so the energy can be directed to the 2 new mains.

Then when the two new mains are long enough, tie them down and wait until those have 3 nodes. Top above the first node:

Repeat, tie down, wait for 3 nodes, top above first:

Eventually you’ll have 8 new mains coming in nicely. I read if you grow outdoors and have the space, theoretically you can repeat until you have 16, or even 32 nodes. But I stop at 8 and have had some good success.
Tie down and defoliate as needed, eventually you’ll have 8 colas full of fat buds:

One thing to note, when you top you can use the cuttings for clones:

If you have autoflower though you might not have enough time to get the plant trained up to 8 nodes, since this method extends the time needed for vegetative stage. What kind of seeds did you get?

Thanks! I’ll continue posting as the progress unfolds. So far, I did the second topping of maybe half of the plants and started tying down the new mains. I’ll start posting some more pictures soon when the plants are a bit bigger.

Did the final topping for my 6 plants, going to repot these soon. The plants I have for my friend are still stunted, so only one has the final topping so far. Once the rest are ready for the final topping I’ll be giving them to him to finish growing out

Have been pretty busy lately so these are probably overdue for a repotting. I picked up the soil, plan to repot by Wednesday. Also my friend picked up his plants, so I’m down to just taking care of my 6 plants for now.
Also since the final topping is done and new nodes are growing in, once these are repotted I’m going to boost the fertilizer to my 50% blend. I remember I changed this up last year thinking I had nutrient burn or something, but it turned out I had spider mites. So I’m going with the original blend for now since I don’t think the fertilizer had anything to do with the problem.
Blend A: 1/2tbsp Neptune’s Harvest 2tbsp Big Bloom 1/2tbsp Grow Big 1tsp Kangaroots
Blend B: 2tbsp Big Bloom 1/2tbsp Grow Big 1tsp Microbe Brew
Also, now that all the training is done, I’m copying my trimming / pruning guidelines from last year for my own reference:
- all yellowing leaves go
- remove fan leaves being shaded by 2 or more leaves above
- remove fan leaves that are touching the bottom of other leaves for improved airflow
- if any shoots in a growth pair are significantly weaker than the other, remove it so energy is directed to the stronger shoot

Plants are looking great in new pots and with new fertilizer blend. Boosting fertilizer to 75% manufacturer recommendations… again, fertilization is alternating between the two blends with a regular watering in between. Also since my previous grows have had problems with fungus gnats, I have been letting the soil dry completely to the point where the leaves start to droop a little bit with every watering. I also pre-emptively hung up the sticky traps and so far have not seen a single fungus gnat for this entire grow. I have not used any diatomaceous earth yet this time around either, but I still have a bunch on hand in case those gnats start showing up.
I already started thinking about how I want to go next year, and maybe I’ll skip the solo cups and go straight to the bigger pots. We’ll see. I also have some auto seeds so maybe I’ll try growing some of those out and try a new training method. The mainlining with photo has been going great so far so I’m hesitant to change it, but time will tell.
Blend A: 3/4tbsp Neptune’s Harvest 3tbsp Big Bloom 2 1/4tspGrow Big 1 1/2tsp Kangaroots
Blend B: 3tbsp Big Bloom 2 1/4tsp Grow Big 1 1/2tsp Microbe Brew

Probably time for 100% fertilizer blends and lowering light cycle slowly over the course of a month to 12/12
Blend A: 1 tbsp Neptune’s Harvest 4 tbsp Big Bloom 1 tbsp Grow Big 2 tsp Kangaroots
Blend B: 4 tbsp Big Bloom 1 tbsp Grow Big 2 tsp Microbe Brew
Let’s see how much the growth blows up. I know this thread is lacking in pictures, but I’ll get some up probably when flowering starts. Right now I just trimmed the plants down quite a bit so they’re not looking too impressive

Plants are looking nice and bushy. I’ll trim / prune again at some point this week when I have time. Flowering already started on the Gold Leaf, I expect the others to start soon so I’m going to change out the fish fertilizer for calmag. Still slowly lowering light cycle a bit per day, should be 12/12 in a few days. Once the majority of the plants are flowering I’ll change up the fertilizer blend to use the tiger bloom similar to last year, but going with 100% manufacturer guidelines this time.
Blend A: 1 tbsp Cal Mag 4 tbsp Big Bloom 1 tbsp Grow Big 2 tsp Kangaroots
Blend B: 4 tbsp Big Bloom 1 tbsp Grow Big 2 tsp Microbe Brew

Time is now on 12/12 and light raised to 95% brightness. I see pistils on all the plants now so I switched grow big to 1tbsp tiger bloom. I remember last year I put lights on 10/14 near the end of flowering because I read it will flower faster, but I don’t know yet if I’ll do that. I tried to have time close to actual sunrise / sunset times, we still get almost 14 hours sunlight so I have the lights switching on soon after sunrise and switching off before sunset. If these are taking a long time to flower I’ll probably follow the natural light cycles to bring it down to 10/14

I had a similar experience once, and light leaks were messing with my girls during flower. Turned out even tiny LEDs from gear could cause stress. Switched to autoflowers from https://2fast4buds.com and haven’t looked back—no more worrying about strict light schedules, and they seem to bounce back quicker from small issues, including light stress.

Sorry for the lack of updates this year. I’ve been busy working side jobs to make ends meet with this insane inflation and lack of any pay increases.
Gold Leaf and Ak47 had amazing harvests. Both bubblegum plants ended up getting infested with spider mites during flowering and I barely had any time to do anything about it so I ended up tossing them. I looked through my notes from last year to see which plants had the spider mite signs, because I remember it was only one or two even though I treated all of them (shared pics of the AK47 through the whole process because it was the best looking plant, but even though I treated it I don’t remember it having any signs of the mites). I think it was the bubblegum that got the spider mites last year too.
I wonder if the gold leaf and ak have a better resistance to mites, considering all the plants were right next to eachother and only the bubblegum plants got bad. Both were heavily infested by the time I noticed, webs all over buds and crawling creatures. The rest of the crops looked completely untouched. I will be sure to continue with gold leaf and ak47 for years to come as my main strains, great luck both times I tried. Need to figure out what I want to do for a third strain for next year
