DSLR Astrophotography
    #845458 - 06/12/20 11:37 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Now that I'm in a location with regularly clear skies, high elevation, less than 2 hours from Bortle Class 1 skies, and have some extra time to devote...I'm going to ease back into my old astronomy/astrophotography hobbies.

It'll be a hot minute before I can afford anything resembling a telescope, but I do have an ancient DSLR with a wireless shutter trigger. I also have a cheap equatorial mount with a simple tracking motor, so as long as I can align the mount correctly, I should be able to get between 1-5 minute exposures without much star smearing.

My plan is to modify the wireless shutter trigger so that it:
  • Can run on a dedicated power supply, instead of coin-cell batteries.
  • Does not require a human around to press the trigger button. I think I'm going to interface it with an arduino, and then right a library that can handle the timing of trigger signals based on desired exposure time, time between exposures, and number of desired exposures.

The real challenge is properly locating celestial targets in my backyard, which is currently Bortle Class 9, extreme light pollution. For right now, I'll have to rely on visible stars and my setting rings to hop from a visible star to the target, knowing the relative displacement in each coordinate, and hoping that my mount is aligned well enough so that the error in position is less than the field of view in my camera.

Anyway...the universe is neat...and I wanna take it's picture  :spaceman:

Sounds nerdy. Besides... We will either be gobbled by a massive black holes or our sun will instantly explode.

I'm leaning more towards option 2.

Sounds to me like you should play Outer Wilds, I loved that game and it involves exploding suns...

It's a risk I'm willing to take...for science

Looks like fallout meets space.

Damn.. that's actually pretty dope. We bought our son a telescope, but it's more along the lines of a glorified set of binoculars. The moon looks pretty dope, but that's it.
