 LST and topping: What happens if you do it too soon?

I've been reading up on autoflowers for a grow I'm gonna be starting pretty soon, all guides mention I should wait for at least 3-4 nodes to LST and top my plants. Why is that? what happens if I top or LST too soon?

If you start too soon you'll stunt the plant, which is especially bad for autos.

Thanks! Even with LST? I'd that it woulnd't be as stressful, you know, since it's in the name

More so with topping, early LST shouldn't hurt too much.
