Feed This Seedling?
    #829203 - 10/24/17 05:52 PM (6 years, 5 months ago)

Grow Type: Indoor/Soil-less/Drain-to-Waste
Strain: Cactus
Type: Sativa
Breeder: Jordan of the Islands
Lights: 7-tube bank of T5HO
Stage: Seedling

This is the first of three seedlings I have managed to get to germinate for my first attempt at an indoor grow.  I have some initial questions.

Is it ready yet for 1/4 strength feed?  Is the slightly yellow portion of new growth at the base of the leaves indicate a deficiency in this instance or is this just normal for a plant at this stage?  This particular plant is 9 days from breaking the surface.

Here are two pics of the seedling in question.

It needs to eat. Coco has little to no nutrients in it.

Burn starts at the tips and works its way inward. Everything else is usually a deficiency, especially that new growth that comes in too light.

I think you may be correct on that analysis, Chwyn.  However, young growth will come in light and turn green as well is my understanding.

The cotyledons are both still attached and green so I was/am assuming it's still feeding the seedling.  The last thing I want to do is burn a nine-day old seedling with nutrients so I'm hoping to err on the side of caution, whichever direction it is dictated I go.

New light growth is usually iron/zinc/sulfer defiency. But those are so small its hard to tell. It probably needs everything.

Nitrogen deficiency starts in older/lower leaves and is an overall lightening of the entire leaf.

Just about every plant I have seen has had lighter shaded new growth. I guess its not a big problem unless it doesnt darken up as it grows.

Update:  Checked on it again this morning and the yellow has move to a nice green.  I am going to assume that's normal for now and keep a watch for the cotyledons to begin to fade and yellow.  Consensus other places appears to be they can go without food the first couple of weeks because the cotyledons feed them.

I'll keep a watch and if it looks like it's not going to fill back in with green take it as a signal to commence feeding.  Thanks for the input.
