What would happen

If terrorist nations took nuclear weapons out to Antarctica or ice shelf's and strategically set off atom bombs. Could they strategically impact the climate and cause global flooding and climate chage I wonder

Antartica has an area of over 5.4 million square miles. The state of Nevada has an area of just over 110,500 squ are miles. Nearly all of the US underground nuclear weapons testing took place in a small portion of Nevada, without majorly disrupting the fragile sandstone in the area.

It would take thousands (if not tens of thousands) of high yield warheads, detonated far underground, to even open up some cracks in the antartic ice sheet. It would then take 10s to 100s of years for this freed ice to march it's way off of the continent and into the world ocean.

So, it would take a terrorist group that is capable of procuring 1000s of high yield warheads (or building their own, from tightly controlled nuclear material), shipping said warheads across a god-forsaken wasteland (the interior of antartica is almost completely devoid of life and life-sustaining resources). Then, shipping out 10s if not hundreds of drilling rigs to these locations...spending months setting up, drilling, and installing the detonation infrastructure. Then when they finally detonate, it would alert the entire developed world to what they had done, and would still take 50-100 years minimum to see any affect...which would allow the rest of the world to stomp the terrorist group and figure out actions needed to minimize loss and adapt to the coming changes (which would amount to climate change and a 200ft sea level change.

Sounds like an impossible amount of effort, that would be impossible to hide, take way too long to set up, way too long to implement, allows tons of time for the victims to react before the end goal is acheived, and results in assured destruction of the group who commits the act. All of this does not jive if you are bent on eventually imposing your way of doing things after destroying your enemy.

Hope this helps to deter you from terrorism, pizzeria :nyan:
