So I was going to get a 4 inch CARBON FILTER this weekend, but I was wondering if there was any cheaper alternatives that work just as good? If not then I'll just end up grabbing the one from the store, but any input is appreciated, thanks. It's for a 1000watt hps.

I got an ozone generator and like it, it takes care of all the smell. They're bad for your lungs so its best vented outside. Cheaper than carbon and should last longer. 6-8000 hours on the electrode and $20 to replace.
I like this guy's stuff on ebay, he's building them himself and cheaper than the commercially available models.
I have the 3.5g no frills version and it works well for my 4x8 tent well. I think its more than it needs.

Many DIY examples exist, easiest I've seen is a pantyhose sock filled with carbon pellets from a pet store, even from a water purifier, sealed and inserted into your vent line, change every few months, but like all carbon filters, they don't like wet air or damp conditions
