t8 bulb in a t12 fixture?

i have a two bulb t12 fixture ive ben using to veg with. each bulb is 20watts. i bought a 17watt t8 bulb to see if it would work in my fixture. it does. i put the t12 bulb back in but would it be ok to run this lower wattage t8 bulb in my t12 fixture?

really, no one here has tried this?
only thing i could find online said the t8 bulbs might burn out faster than the t12s.

ive been running the t8 for a few days now without any problems.
even with the lower wattage t8s, they are noticebly brighter than the t12s.
