Seeking advice on exact time to harvest crop
    #723985 - 03/31/14 05:39 AM (10 years, 3 hours ago)

Hi there. I have a couple of plants on the go at the moment so I want to use this thread to work out my optimum time to harvest them. I have done my research (new to growing) so know the nuts and bolts but I am looking more for any specifics the experts can help me out with.

At the moment I am concerned with this plant:

The strain is Early Girl. She is an outdoor grow (Australia, so end of summer in the southern hemisphere) in a pot. About a foot tall so quite small.

I am hoping to harvest for a more heady high so I believe this will be when the trichs go cloudy but before they are amber. Here is a look at the trichs:

Would I be right in assuming this girl probably has another week to go maybe? I'm not looking for hard and fast answers, just some guidance - I know this is all part of my learning experience, making the next grow better. The trichs to me do seem to look mainly clear with a few cloudy spots, although maybe this image is not clear enough.

If anyone can help me out that would be great

Thanks for the replies.

I actually used a 40x loupe to get that image, but I will have another go to try and get a better shot. It's hard because you lose some quality shrinking it to 512kb, unless I'm doing something wrong.

Also, one other bit of info - this strain says 8 weeks usually for flowering, and this has been flowering at least 7 weeks.

I will have another go at getting a better shot, if anyone has any advice on shooting pics with a loupe I'm all ears!

Fucking psyched for my first harvest  :bigblunt:

Ok, hoping this will shed a little more light.

This is a look at the plant, showing the leaves yellowing and dying (have flushed twice and given no nutes in last week or two - soil pot grow).

Here is the main cola. Still a couple of white hairs in there, but mainly red hairs, still sticking out a little - are they meant to curl in more than that? Also, I am confused because the buds/colas just look more like a collection of leaves than like the bud you get when you smoke cannabis. This is my first grow so maybe I'm missing something here?

And here's hopefully a better one of the trichomes.

Any help or advice much appreciated.

Are you checking for bugs?  Looks like you might be dealing with spider mites.

I see a couple of amber heads, but that's about it.

Dammit! I did see a couple of tiny spiders and one or two bugs on there but I thought maybe that was just par for the course with it being outdoors.

Ah crud, any recommendations on what to do? Will that slow down flowering?

nothing to do now that plant is way to close to finish to use anything. There is stuff that is said to be safe up to harvest but i wont recommend them.
sucks, but dont worry about it you dont even wanna know how many times you smoked buds that were attacked by mites.

Yeah, there is nothing you can do about it now.  But I don't think they are super close to finishing either way.  I'd say a couple more weeks at least.  You will really only know by looking at those trichomes very day.

Thanks for the advice guys ... Disappointing, but just another thing to learn from to make next year better.

I found this page which recommends just giving the plant a good blast of water on the leaves and branches every day for three days to help knock out the bugs - might try that as I have nothing to lose I guess.

http://www.theweedblog.com/how-to-kill-spider-mites-on-your-marijuana-plants/

Any advice on preventing this from happening next year? I read something about keeping compost in your soil medium to increase the number of other bugs that might prey on spider mites ...

I use Azamax. Its a pesticide.  Supposidly safe right up to harvest. But I never use after 6 weeks ooint or so.  Works well as a foliar spray in veg and early flower. I spray mine once every 7 days at the beginning stages.  Seems to keep the bugs at bay.

only problem I have in my parts are slugs and snails getting up on plants eating leaves.

OK, thanks for the help chaps. I've given her a bit of a blast with a dish soap and cayenne pepper spray which seemed to work at least initially (little spiders were bungee-ing right off her after I sprayed). Will do it again over next few days as even if I am close to harvest I don't wanna be lighting those little fuckers up when I smoke.

I also trimmed a lot of the badly-damaged fan leaves - here is how she's looking now.

Also, here is a photo of some weird things on the stem - are they where the spider mites lay their eggs? I managed to clean them off with some tissue and water, not too hard, but they deffo look suspicious. Would love an ID if anyone knows?

OK, well I've chopped her now. Trichs started turning amber so I figure she's good to go.

I did an initial trim and hung the branches up to dry. This is my first go at trimming - does this look right? Do I need to take off more?

Hey guys, two questions I need help with:

1 - Does this sucker look trimmed ok? Any tips?

2 - Any ideas on how to cut down the chance of developing spidermites on future grows?

Cheers

Trim job doeant look too bad.  Some people trim a little more some leave more leaf.  I like it trimmed a little tighter.  But all jy smoke is for personal use.  If it was a comercial grow or you sell a lot of your stash you might leave more in the bud. (Added weight)

As far as mites. I dont usually have a problem with outdoor but I would pick up a mild psticide and a spray bottle.  Mix up some juice and spray them babys down once a week when they are vegging and beginning stages of flower.
