So if you haven't found this one out by now its going to save you a lot of time cleaning that salty-white crusty stuff that accumulates on everything.
The secret ingredient is Vinegar. A gallon cost $3-4 and softens the crust so that you can scrub it off with a nylon brush. Let the stuff soak in hot water with a few cups of vinegar (cup per gallon?) and then scrub it off with ease. Some of the thicker stuff can still be tough to get off, but sometimes it only takes a minute or two of soaking. You need acid to get the stuff off. It normally comes in 5% acidity, distilled white or apple cider, but they also make a white cleaning 6% that would be better if you can find it for the same price.
Its also great for cleaning the water spots off your bong. Salt+Alcohol for the main wash, rinse, followed by baking soda that I coat the inside with and then pour vinegar inside. The reaction of the baking soda and acid takes the + ions that have adhered to the glass. Vinegar alone works pretty good but the baking soda will help. The glass will shine like its brand new. Soaking might be required for long term build up. I started using filtered water in the bong because I have very hard water.
