Spot Rot
    #681585 - 08/15/13 09:19 AM (10 years, 7 months ago)

A couple of plants have developed little dots that spread into brown, dead spots. After the spots spread, they turn dusty grey and the leaf dies. It almost looks like something has been sprayed on it. One plant has been gutted.

Sorry, I don't understand. I am wondering what could be causing my plants to die from a spreading disease that starts out as spots and progresses to whole sections rotting away. More wondering what I could do about it other than strip away anything that looks unhealthy before it takes out more.

Really man?  So you want us to just throw out possibilities of what it might be without any background info?  I don't get it.

Were more than happy to help you figure it out, but we need some information from you to do that.

This info will help?

Growing from seed, outdoors, in a hole, with potting soil, about 6 feet tall, water about a gallon of water most days, fertilise a couple times a week with MG bloom boost.

Now do you know what the disease might be?

My money would be on the miracle grow.  That's notorious for causing problems.

What do you mean by "gutted a plant?"

Not all plants are affected, and other nearby plants of other types also have dots (but they don't start rotting). Also, I have never heard of Miracle Grow causing plants to develop spots and rot. It really looks like a disease, not a nutrient deficiency.

By gutted, I mean GUTTED.

Do you have any photos of the disease beyond whats on the top?

Also, filling out the questionnaire in it's entirety is always useful.

Here is a picture of what the spot looks like in the beginning, and a picture after the necrosis has taken over. The morning dew can really start those spots rotting.

Looks like a leaf spot fungus (note the lighter "halos" around the spots), though I read some spot diseases can be from bacteria.

I'm thinking this is quite a bit too much of a high P fertilizer, especially if you don't know how much was in the soil to begin with. What climate are you in, bc a gallon per day in the ground seems like a lot, even for a 6 ft tall plant (I should note, though, that we have very clayey soil and this really holds water well, even when amended with some perlite and peat moss)? Too much water along with too much nutrients is a disease breeding ground.

Also, as we have high humidity/lots of morning dew for the first ~2/3 of flowering, fairly frequent oil (I use neem oil) applications in the evenings help ward off fungi, along with having some baking soda kept on the leaf/bud surfaces (left on when the spray evaporates.)
