What if?
    #670483 - 05/13/13 12:06 AM (10 years, 10 months ago)

I currently have a tent going that is 24" x 24" x 60". I've got a filter/fan combo filtering up to 171 cfm in a 20.3 cuft area + a 8 inch fan on the bottom. What if I decided to get a 250w hps/mh... could I pull it off without needing a cool hood or do these things all run at different temps?

Ive used a 175 MH and a 150 HPS in a 1.5'x1.5x5'. The hydrofarm mini sunbursts with magnetic ballasts built in so theyre a lil hot and all i had was a lil pc fan.

I wanted to get a 250 myself and push it further cuz indoors in ac at 76 max temps in tent were like mid 80s. I dont think a 250 would be a prolem with your set up.

My house does get a little warm during the summer but not more then 85 I think we try to keep it at 82 normally.

This is the one I'm looking at

http://www.ebay.com/itm/250w-HPS-MH-Grow-Light-Digital-Ballast-Kit-Hangers-Timer-Complete-250-watt-/271115410241?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item3f1fbcdb41

seems decent and has a 3 year warranty. I can't find much first hand from people using it though

Do you guys think if the house was 82 it could cause a heat issue?

I dunno man just do it. The good thing aboug your 250 is it has an external ballast. The 250 i was thinkin of using has the ballast built into the light so its always in the tent. If you put the ballast outside the tent thatll help but 82 in your house is a lil warm. Id expect it to get up to 95, but them again it sounds like you got a good fan.

Hard to say...Just try it.

I have a 250 with my ballast outside, but I also have 104 watts of CFLs.

Stays at room temp with a 240 Cfm fan on half strength. I figure you'll be good:)

That's good to hear Maestro, how many cuft is your area?

I heard one review that said it runs pretty cool. I think I'll take a leap of faith on this one. I guess if it doesn't work out then I may need to upgrade a tent or maybe I could find a suitable cool tube.

32in x32in x5ft

But if you don't have an air-cool able reflector it's not gonna work our well.

If you do, make sure you keep them short (12 in below the lights). I keep making that mistake in my grows. 2-3 branches are so tall they're touching the reflector, and getting burn spots:sad:

So you think if I were to go without a hood I'd likely run into issues?

I don't think I would be able to do a single duct in my small tent without some major bends in the ducting. I would probably have to set the filter vertically with a L curve(or horizontally with multiple bends) to one port of the hood and then another L to the fan and another L to the exhaust.

I guess it could work if I could find a hood that is slightly smaller then my tent, then just have the ducting go from one port to an exhaust with a new fan pulling only that... I wonder how many cfms I would need... if I could just use one of those cheap duct fans that run something like 70-150 cfm. Then I could keep my fan/filter where it is(at the very top of the tent horizontally pulling air in a straight line out the exhaust.

Hmmm

edit: nm that would totally ruin my smell proof

Naw man, you'll be fine with a uneven duct. Mine is a spiral lmao. I'll post a pic for u later.

Oh and my reflector is way too huge for a 250watt. But yeah, air cool able

I wonder how much clearance I would need on both sides of the light to fit it all in a 24" area.

edit: This looks promising

http://www.hydroponics-grow-light.com/GROW-LIGHT/SunGro-Grow-light-Reflector-hydroponics-growlight.html

I would need to buy a socket... do I also need a ballast? It is only the hood being sold. Can I just go socket to plug and not have a ballast? nm I probably do.

It'll fit fine except the filter. You might wanna attach it to the ceiling right away, then connect to ducting when you notice a smell.

Waiting for the lights to turn on to take pics

nice that looks like it could work also. It doesn't say 250w but it should work right? so with that I would need a complete socket set and a 250w ballast. Unfortunately my ceiling vent is way to close to the top of my closet to vent out that way... I would need to mount my filter horizontally then duct to the light then duct to the exhaust out of the back. My exhaust is up in the very top right corner so it still takes about the same space as if I were vertically mounting up and out.

actually that still only leaves a clearance of 2.5 inches on both sides it would have to be a very sharp bend in the duct for it to fit.

I like how this hood

http://www.hydroponics-grow-light.com/GROW-LIGHT/SunGro-Grow-light-Reflector-hydroponics-growlight.html has a vent on the very top and a vent on the side but it is pricey and doesn't come with glass or anything else. If only I could find more with this style design with a budget price tag

I might wait until after this grow finishes and see how my buds will be with my t5's. Right now I'm running exactly 2' x 2' of T5ho, that's two 2' x 1' systems with a supposed output of 10k lumens per system. Total of 192watts. 4 6700k bulbs and 4 3000k.  Maybe adding a couple 3000k/42w cfls would be better in the meantime.

I'm still playing around with the idea of upgrading my light.

Has anyone ever put a thermometer directly to a 250w hps or mh bulb, that has been running a while? I'm curious what the direct temp may be, to see if I'm going to be facing a huge increase. If anyone is bored and wants to measure the temp of their 250w bulb that would be awesome.

My T5ho's read 100f directly touching a thermometer.

I did find a cooled hood that looks like it would work, maybe I should just add the extra 50-70 bucks and do it right.

If you are going to get an HID, ALWAYS get the aircooled hood.  It's the best way to go, even though a 250 shouldn't get incredibly hot.

:whathesaid:

I had a 175 MH and it wasnt really a problem but when I got it I didnt get the optional lens.

Later on I got the lens just cuz I had some extra cash (it was like 20 bucks) and rigged up a lil PC fan to the light cuz it had an optional cooling kit too but I just used the PC fan.

Even though it was already pretty cool, the lens helped a LOT. I was able to have the plants touch the lens with no problem...but it was also just a 175 MH.

Thanks guys I may end up doing that soon.

I bought these cheap t5ho systems and they came with 6500k bulbs but on both sides of the bulbs near the socket, 1/2" is dim on everyone of the bulbs, did this guy sell me used bulbs or does this happen sometimes? Should I replace them?

The red ones I ordered recently are completely illuminated.

4" to 6" duct adapter connected to 6" ducting connected to 6" cool hood connected to another 4 to 6" duct adapter to 4" carbon filter.

183$ 250w hps/mh bulbs, UL ballast, 6"  glass air cooled w/ 3 year warranty on ballast
14$ for two duct adapters according to home depot online
probably around 14$ for a roll of 6" ducting
$211ish total

These duct adapters should be at all home improvement stores right? I'm just trying to put together what I will need to order online, I'm sure the size ducting and adapters will be cheapest and readily available in any home improvement store ye?
