Return of Goombah's Ghetto Grow - THC Bomb,1000w,Indoor, Hydro
    #639737 - 10/08/12 11:49 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Hi Everyone, here's what I got:

Flood and drain fence post with 11 gallon reservoir
1000w MH for veg
1000w warm MH for flower (I wanted to give this a try instead of 1000w HPS which always seems to slow everything down come flower time- I hate it).
Fox Farm tiger bloom, big bloom, grow big, and cal mag.
pH up/down
Grow basement: Insulated the ceiling down there recently - maintains rh around 50%, temp 80 deg F. Air exchange via drier vent. BTW I have never had a bug problem growing in the basement.
10 THC Bomb seeds from Herbies
1 Fruity Chronic (freebie)from Single Seed Center
1 Royal Queen Fruit something or other (freebie)
1" rockwool cubes (cut in half)placed in hydroton and 3" net pots

I had 100% germination with THC bomb within 24 hrs on a moist paper towel. Fruity seeds took a day longer. Used tweezers to stuff them into rockwool then they go right into the system. Light 18/24, PPM 400, Ph 6.0.

So here's where I'm at now from seed to Day 19 (PPM 1000): (PS - if they look a little thin it's because I just cut a bunch of clones)

I was pretty excited about how vigorous the TCH Bomb was growing until I read somewhere that it tastes like Funyuns. Guess I should have researched a little better. I may have a little stretch in places too. Got a couple phenos that seem a bit leggy but it may be my fault because I don't like getting that 1000w too close. I must say that otherwise the plants are exceeding my expectations, most are getting a slight purple opalescence that doesn't show on the camera. Averaging > 1" daily. I'm going to flip them in about 3 days.

Today I rigged a DWC cloner based on a thread I found on this site. My first try with cloning was disastrous so I really hope this works. I'm using a cheapo LED so the tops won't get too hot. pH at 5.5, no nutes:

Thanks for looking. Wish me luck!

hey goom looks nice, are you just doing a nutrient film technique inside your setup? ive actually been looking at something similar lol. a little larger but smaller than what im doing, im looking to be able to get 4 plants under one light and see if i can get above 1g/watt.

as for your aero cloner... i wouldnt use a transparent bin, for whatever reason in my experience when using clear beer cups clones dont seem to do as well, i would be afraid that the light exposure to the root area may cause issues.... im not sure so dont quote me on that. maybe some one else has a better answer.

Light should never be exposed to the root area.  That's just asking for issues.

That's because you're changing the water every day,  otherwise you'll get issues with algae and what not.

In the long term with any type of hydro the roots and the res need to be protected from light.  It can stunt root growth and grow all sorts of bad shit in your res.  And

i run clear rez in my cloner and dutch master zone in my rez, however i do not run any beneficials at all, so i can do that. Id imagine if your running beneficials, hawk's theory on "all sorts of bad shit" growing could definitely not be good. If nothing else simply competing with the beneficials.

brainsOplenty, out of curiosity how long after you see roots pop are you leaving the cuttings in the cloner?

Mr. Miyagi
I guess this is more of a DWC set up than a nutrient film. I actually food the rails every couple hours with a pump and let it dwell for 15 minutes or so. A dam at the end releases the overflow while the pump is running. When the pump is off the system drains via gravity.

The rails are just 6' fence post I got at Home Depot. One rail has a capacity of 11 plants using 3" net pots. Think I paid about $12 each. The whole thing cost about $70 (excluding the light).

Anyway, I personally have never hit 1g/watt running 12 plants at a time but I can tell you why: First of all, I loose 3 feet of head space because I'm in a small basement. The system is a few feet off the floor due to the reservoir so I have to keep the plants short. Secondly, I choose speed over volume shooting for a 7-8 week harvest instead of 11-12. I think you could most certainly hit 1g/watt with 4 plants (or even less)providing you use a ScrOG method - which would require a few more weeks of veg time. I keep saying I'm going to try it but haven't yet. Right now I'm shooting for short, fat, and fast (kinda like my boyfriend -)

That's called an Ebb and Flow.  DWC is different.

Just read your conversation regarding this. Probably better to err on the side of caution and cover up the roots. I know if I don't on the main system I definitely end up with algae in my tubing. Call me lazy but I can't see myself faithfully changing the water everyday.

Yeh, I think I called it a flood and drain on my first post. I thought that Ebb and Flow was a type of DWC (as opposed to NFT, drip, or aero)or are you constantly under water with a DWC? Could I do that - run the pump all the time without killing the plants? I'd be afraid to try it.

Most people don't.  And in a full size hydroponic system there shouldn't be a need to.  A once a week minimum is required though IMO.

A DWC is where the the roots are always submerged in water, with an airstone flowing air over the roots all the time.  I would not run your system 24hrs, that design is not meant for that type of operation.

Grow Update [Re: Hawksresurrection]
    #640744 - 10/17/12 01:51 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Day 26 from seed:

In the second picture I've tried to capture the purple opalescence the leaves are developing, sorry it doesn't show very well

So I've flushed the system and flipped the lights to 12/24. I've changed the bulb to 1000w MH Hortilux "warm" so we'll see what happens. Still using FF nutes with added cal/mag,PPM 1250, and this will be the first time I've ever tried foliar feeding, though I honestly don't see the point in it since I don't have any nutrient deficiencies. Anyone out there have experience with foliar? Just hoping it doesn't fry my plants because the stuff smells like gravy master. I applied a gentle misting to the underside which I will do weekly unless it causes a problem.
