Obtaining Quality Water?
    #625697 - 06/02/12 05:06 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

So I have been growing cannabis for about 4 years now and have been using well water with no problems at all, despite it smelling occasionally like sulfur and copper.  But as of late, I have been reading posts here and have started to become concerned with my water.

I am too broke to affor a TDS/EC meter to determine the mineral content, but I have decided to attempt another approach.

Seeing as I am too broke to afford such a meter, I am equally too broke to afford either a distillation or RO purification system.

BUT ... I do have a  5L copper still from Al-Imbiq. Would such a still be suitable for processing water to use to water my babies?

I am asking you HawksApprentice, since you seem to be the most anal-retentive about water quality.

I would imagine the amount of fuel you would be using would be pretty expensive, not to mention time consuming.

I say if you're concerned get it tested at the extension office.  It's usually like 20 bucks

I've got firewood, so I think I might be able to avoid that problem. Also, I'm on Summer break so I have time.

Any other issues?

Shit dude, if you've been using it for 4 plus years with no issues then don't worry about man.  No need to fix something that's not broken.

Is there a reason you can't collect rain water (though I agree with hawk)?  Also, I say you test out how long it takes you to get 5 gallons of water.  I think that would really change your thoughts on trying to use the still

I've collected rainwater before when the right storm comes up, the gutters from my roof and collect 5 gallons of water in less than 3 minutes or less. The problem is storing it, mosquitoes are rampant around here. The only barrels I have are being used to house compost. I recycle all my FoxFarm at the end of each year.

I might look into getting an HDPE barrel with lid for storing rainwater. There are some reasonable local deals. Plus, if I leave it in the full sun, the water will be too hot to allow Mosquito larvae to live.

I water my Lophs with rain water on occasion, but I usually I use bottled water.

I do like my water. My father maintains his koi pond with it and they don't complain either. We also maintain a couple plants with the pond and they rarely dehydrate even in drought including Pontederia, Wisteria, and Acer spp. (edited for spelling)

I might snag a pic later.

Also, I just asked my dad if he ever tested it. He said he tested it with a kit about a decade back. Then the pH was around 7.2 he says. I guess there was/is a lime deposit somewhere in there. It'd

It kind of makes me laugh considering how acidic the soil is around here. I have Vaccinium spp. growing all around in my yard.

Seriously man, you've been using it with no issues.  So don't worry about it.  But I would get at least a cheap pH tester and make sure your at least adjusting that.
