I dunno why my mind is fucking with me so bad in my sleep lately. I used to wake up never remembering my dreams. But now I do every day and they're all always really shitty.

Yeah man. Its all kindsa weird shit. Best friends dying, favorite bar burning down, getting arrested for a robbery I didn't do, still being with my whore ex, fighting with my dad.
Crazy stuff I never even think about when I'm awake. I know they say dreams are a subconscious reflection or some shit, but they are the exact opposite of what I want or would do in those situations. Odd. Maybe they're just there to keep me in check - to keep me straight. Like, I say "I'd never steal anything again" or "I'd never talk to that bitch again", etc and my dreams are just showing me how shitty life would be if I changed my mind on those things.

As thoughts tend to snowball and build on themselves when we are awake, the natural course of a train of thought seems to grow and escalate when in a dream as well. I think that's why dreams keep consistent for so long, and why nightmares resonate a lot even when you've woken up. You still have those abstractly nightmarish associations still buzzing around in your mind.
They can certainly be reflections of things you do not want to happen, and why. You do think of that on a subtle level when awake, you just don't go into as much detail. Hence the snowball effect with these more subtle concepts. I guess when tripping a similar thing would happen as well when you have a well established topic in your mind.
