Cannabis and genetics?
    #624300 - 05/24/12 07:10 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys, I'm not really sure if this is the right section, but I was studying genetics today and reasoned that if pea plants and other angiosperms follow Mendelian genetics, why wouldn't cannabis?

For example, purple bud is a phenotypical trait (let's forget about possible incomplete dominance for now). Is such a trait recessive or dominant? This could be extrapolated to more general phenotypical properties light plant height, bud structure and CBD synthase activity. Just a curiousity; has anyone really observed the classical Mendelian phenotype/genotype relationship in strains of cannabis?

Well, I think a lot of those strains are generated through artificial selection and such -- which does involve analysis of particular phenotypes and repetitive cross-breeding to simulate natural selection (hence the term artificial selection), but is there any freely available information on recessive and dominant traits?

There's a book out there called marijuana botany.  I'd bet that covers this subject.  But I haven't actually read ityet so I can't say for sure that it does cover what you're looking for.

Are you talking about "Marijuana Botany An Advanced Study: The Propagation and Breeding of Distinctive Cannabis by Robert Connell Clarke"

It's quite interesting. I've only skimmed it through, but there's some good shit in there. The cannabis plant sure is fascinating. I wonder if I can buy this book as a hard copy... Reading off a pdf is a pain in the ass.
