6, 12 or 24 hours for canna butter ???
    #583222 - 09/03/11 12:23 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

So I have read to cook cannabutter anywhere from 6-24 hours.

So whats the consensus here?

I think its more than 6 but less than 24 :confused2:

really? coconut oil can absorb more thc than alot of other oils due to half of it being lauric acid, surprised you never heard of it being used before it will bring out the full effect

I use 5.33 oz of trim to 4 lbs of butter, in a Hamilton Beach crock pot ($45 on Amazon) set to "warm", for 48 hours.  Note, you'll have to re-set the crock pot every 15 hours or something, as it has an auto-shutoff timer.  To the point, this method of making butter is hands off, just stir it a couple of times throughout, strain, and you'll have some KILLER cannabutter. :toomuchacid:

The 5.33 oz of trim to 4 lbs butter typically yields about 5 - 5.5 cups of finished product.

I dont know how its done with butter as i've never used it, but with coconut oil I think the longest i've left it on is 2 hours and I think even then it might be too long since it was pulling it alot of chlorophyl

4 hours.

The method I like best is to put a couple inchest of water in the bottom of a pot.  Add 4 sticks of butter and an ounce of what ever I have.  I remove all the stems first then I grind my pot in a coffee grinder.  Bring the water to a simmer.  Add the butter and let it melt.  Then add the pot.  Whisk together.  Simmer for 4 hours.  Stir often in the first hour and only once an hour for the remaining three.  Now strain the water butter pot through cheese cloth into other containers that you can lid up.  Put those in the fridge.  The butter will rise to the top the water will fall.  The butter will harden.  Remove the butter from the top and discard the water.  This method removes a lot of the crud you don't want to eat anyway.  Also the water prevents the butter from burning or scorching during the long simmer.

Good Luck, :headbanger:
C.H.

From personal experience I know that 4 hours is not nearly enough time to extract all of the goodies from the plant materiel @ 210F.

Go for an 8 hour extraction and you will know what I mean

For my next round of cooking I may take a small pot and about ~2 cups of oil and heat it to ~300F and let a couple of ounces of weed sit in that for a couple of hours :justdontknow:

  Worked well for me.  I guess the thing to do is a side by side test.  Split the batch and do one for four hours and one for eight and so on.  It's a shame there isn't some magical dipstick that gives you ppm of the THC THCA CBD CBN.  Wouldn't that be nice.

The bottom line is that there are a lot of ways to make a functional cannabutter.  I choose the crock pot and 48 hour on warm because it's hands off, doesn't require any babysitting, stir it to mix at the beginning when the butter first melts, and then maybe once or twice more.  Strain and cool.  Ready for use.

I have in the past used boiling water, throw in the butter and the herb, and let that go for an hour or two.  But really, that method requires considerably more effort, particularly when you're done and you have to separate the water from the butter.  It can be done, but there is definitely more loss involved, in that sludgy scummy watery butter that doesn't ever harden quite right.

With the slow cooker, water is completely removed from the equation, no watching over a boiling pot, and you are left with an easily strained, cooled and hardened product with negligible added moisture and minimal sediment that can easily be scraped off the bottom of your cannabutter bricks and used as a B-grade product if you prefer.

Dude!!

1 hour isn't NEARLY enough time to extract all the goodies.

Yea, you got high from it, but you could have gotten MUCH higher had you been more patient with it :flowstone:

Im not sure why I even bothered asking this kind of question here

Did you not do any reading prior to attempting to make your cannabutter?

I've not read one single tek that calls for a 1 hour cook.
All the teks I've read called for no less than 6-8 hours

See, I've tried using butter up to 24 hours in a slow cooker and the results were .... meh

The best results I've had to date is using Coconut Oil.
Its solid like lard @ room temperatures.

Warm the oven up to ~300f
put coco oil in to liquify
add cannabis and stir well
let sit in oven ~2 hours
stirring every ~20 minutes
strain and use/store for later use

This method made a product that was easily 2x more potent than any of my prior cannabutter attempts.

And FYI I have been making just enough for a single batch of brownies.
Eight cleaned grams of the same cannabis to 1/3 cup of butter/oil in all my batches.
The only difference has been the way I made the cannabutter/oil.
This way everything is the same except the process.
So I can know what actually works, and what doesn't
Plus I have been getting feed back from some friends as well

Finally somebody who has used coconut oil as well can comment on a low hour cook with great results like I've had!

Yea, the coconut oil works the best of all the oils I've tried so far.

DO NOT USE EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL

I have some soy lecithin on the way too
its supposed to help the thc bind to the oil
and help your body to absorb the thc

I have also started powdering my cannabis, sifting out the lil pieces of stems and not straining the oil.
Leaving the cannabis in the oil will allow whatever you make to get stronger as it sits.

Or better yet to increase potency but loose the flakey bits (not that its always bad). Let it chill over night (or longer) than reheat and strain and let chill again.

In order to grow good weed you need to be part carpenter, electrician, plumber, biologist, geneticist, chemist, and very willing to get dirty.

I've been working with power tools since I was 8, my dad is an electrical engineer who owned a 280 gal fish tank, and I studied biology with a specialty in genetics. Getting dirty comes naturally. I think my parents inadvertently trained me to be a weed grower.

See what you think on my first try.
