Has terrifying political stances.

I always found him to have the least terrifying stances. I guess he would be terrifying if you have a vested interest in all the hegemony.

I doubt you'll find any candidate whom you would agree with across the board. Ron Paul is one of the few people who sticks to his principles of states rights, rather than compromise those when it comes to social issues such as abortion or gay marriage like other so called republicans.

I don't agree with everything but upon comparing him to everyone else, well there's not much of a choice.  I would even go to say that if a candidate has a serious opinion about gay marriage and abortion other than it should be decided by the states that instantly disqualifies them in my mind.  If they can't stay true to the constitution in that instance then why should I trust them with anything else?

He's also pro-life among other things.

He also supports lower tax rates, which I don't support.

He also supports an opt out program for Social Security. The problem is we have old people that already paid in, and get money from the new people that are paying in. So if people opt out the oldies are either fucked, or the gov has to pay it out of taxes (which i don't really care it's whatever to me, but he's against raising income tax.

I mean, the top 2 things kind of are what makes it impossible for me to vote for him; and they are the terrifying parts to me. I could say more but i gotsta smoke.

Yes, Ron Paul is pro-life but he clearly states that the issue should be decided by the states, not the federal government.  As far as lower taxes, that has to do with the federal level.  He could care less about individual states and their decisions.

Which I partly agree with, though I think we need a more universal, well funded education system.  We have too much disparity between states as far as the quality of education goes in our public schools.

Well, to reword that so nobody gets me wrong.

I'm not anti federal essentially, i like states power as it is now.

I already knew he also wants states to decide it.

I personally don't want to live in kansas if the feds have no power over them, and kansas legislature has the end all with laws/regulations here.

All it would do is cause the democrats to flee red states, and republicans to flee blue states. Idk if mixed states would cause to much pressure on people to leave or if it would tip to one side eventually. I would have to go to Colorado or something.

But then you create too many complications between the cultures of the individual states and the federal government.  See: marijuana laws.

Also jim crow laws could easily be argued unconstitutional, obviously.  Just because you're pro-states rights doesn't mean any individual state can just make up any laws it pleases.  The laws still have to follow the federal constitution.  However with giving the federal government excess power it has exceeded the original expectations of its power circle.

Obviously some things should be managed at the federal level, for instance it was a poor situation having states have their own individual currency.  But the vast majority of things create inequality when argued at the federal level.  You have situations like in California where a state majority has decided on a law yet the federal government has the power to override what the people have voted on.

Also laws are notoriously difficult to overturn at the federal level.

And I tend to disagree, I think marijuana laws should also be up to the fed's. I'm pretty against making laws based on morality with no victims. And honestly I don't understand how it is not easily said to be unconstitutional.

>And on the note of cali i totally agree they don't have the right to make it legal but it's whatever. I also agree it should be legal so i'm just not going to plan on joining the DEA.

Really I view most issues like prohibition of fairly harmless drugs just the product of stupidity (read: ignorance, i just like the word stupid more).

MAYBE I could be ok with states get -some- more rights (like have it be ok to have state laws overrule federal). But that's an issue for another day. because i gotta go.

But wouldn't it make more sense to allow federal laws to over-rule state laws, but limit their power to do so according to the constitution?

Marijuana laws are only unconstitutional if you believe in states rights to decide on the issue...

This is a very harsh conversation for the Smoke lounge, really guys ease up a bit, politics and ideologies are touchy and everyone has their own opinions, even if you completely disagree don't be a dick, just kindly disagree.

Anyways i think America has fucked its self a lot and we should start over, but the constitution away, and restart the government as quickly and without as much anarchy as possibly.  Things just aren't going the way they should, lets just scratch it, and do things they way they should be.

I spend a lot of time on Reddit defending libertarian principles, and then I come here to check shit out and see I have to do it again, my level of rigor here isn't the same.

I like libertarian policies usually, just i don't like RP for prez. Worst things could happen, it's just not going to be my vote. Then again anyone on the republican ticket would get the same treatment.

One thing i have thought about is if Ron Paul did become prez.

How many Veto's you think he would get?

I assume he would try to veto whatever he felt was unconstitutional.

A lot, depending on how fiscally conservative congress goes next time around.

I'm personally figuring congress isn't going to swing much right, but maybe that's my left wing bias.

I'm just hate house republicans with such a passion I don't know how anyone could (by that i mean what's goin on this class of congress).

But Would be entertaining.

I mean if RP got prez chances are congress could get a large right winged style class too.

There is still another year for congress to win voters back though, nothing is exactly set in stone. And people will forget about the debt ceiling stuff fairly quickly i assume if they haven't been watching the news and listening to it all day every day.

Is a 16 year old guy having sex w/a 16 year old girl a pedophile?
If not, then how is a 30 year old considered a pedophile for doing the same thing?
I think y'all need to look up the definition for pedophile.

Lolwut?

That's not even true at all.

As someone who watches CNN/HLN/MSNBC pretty much 24/7 as i go about my day (mostly gaming) I will say CNN specifically talk about him a good deal. MSNBC has mentioned him plenty. Talking about his polls, libertarian this and that.

They also don't trash him nearly as much as the other "right wing hopefuls."

Idk, i honestly prefer RP than any other republican candidate hands down though. You should take that last comment with a grain of salt though.

Regardless if he wins or not, his inclusion in the race would shift the rhetoric to real issues. It's a win-win for America.

The press takes Ron Paul just as seriously as they did the last two times he ran for President. Which is not at all. His own party doesn't even take him seriously. Most likely cause he doesn't stand a chance in hell of winning.

The reason they don't take him seriously is because he have a feedback loop in the media and it goes like this:

Corporations -> Media -> Government -> Corporations

Ron Paul is a threat to the corporations who depend on government subsidies and legislation to reap huge profits off consumers and destroy their competition. These same corporations are also the sponsors/owners/affiliates of all of our major cable news networks, and not surprisingly the candidates themselves. So it is no surprise that they would portray him as some sort of fringe candidate, while talking up their other corporate sponsored candidates.

If his results running for president are like the last two times he ran nobody esp corporations, media, and Government see him as a threat to anything.

I'd actually like to see him win but I'm not gonna fool myself.
