Noob needs help.
    #577717 - 08/11/11 11:29 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Ok so this is my first ever attempt at an indoor garden. I germinated 6 seeds and planted them in soil.
When they stood straight up looking for light I put them under a 400w MH conversion. In the morning they
are all (but one) laying over. I am ok with the fact that they may be doomed, if not already dead,
I just want to know where I went wrong so I don't make the same mistakes twice.

Soil Growers:
1. Are you growing from seed or clones?

Seed

2. How old are your plants?

3 Days

3. How tall are your plants?

an inch?

4. What size containers are they planted in?

16 oz cups with 5 holes in the bottom

5. What is your soil mix?
I just kind of winged it..

1 part cheap soil (with perlite)
1 part shagnum moss
1 part perlite
1 part vermiculite
5% by volume blood meal
5% by volume bone meal
5% by volume gypsum

6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use?

Have only watered once so far, distilled.

7. What is the pH of your water?

Distilled

8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio?

none

9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything?

no

10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights")

400w MH conversion

11. How close are your lights to the plants?

8-10 inches

12. What size is your grow space in square feet?

The floor size is 7sq ft

13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space?

don't yet have these tools. Ambient temps and rh- 76F, 55%

I have a 745 CFM ventilating the space.

14. What is the pH of the soil?

untested

15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space?

no

16. How much experience do you have growing?

Zilch

Everything was perfectly fine until they went under the light. Here are some visuals.

My guess is too little humidity, to my understanding you should keep them under a humidity dome until the first real leafs develop.

Ok, I had heard that about clones but wasn't aware that was the case for seedlings.

I haven't found much information on this early stage of growth. 90% of the gowlogs
start at flower initiation. Thanks for the info.

Test your soild PH and the ph of your water.  A humidity dome in my experience isn't nessisary for seedlings.  Due to the fact it has a root system.  Very small but still there.  The humidity domes are used for clones in order so the plant can still obsorb water through the leaves.
Its seems like it could be a ph problem.  with untested water and home made soil with no ph buffers added that is where I am leaning.  The water testers for ph can be inexpensive to rather expensive.  i started with a pool ph test kit bought at walmart.  relitively inexpensive and will help you dial in your water.
PH is cruicial.
Good luck

Seeded plants do not need a humidity dome, at all.

i think it was too soon to get them under a HID. i always start my seeds under CFL's and then transfer once the leaf set has started.

Get yourself a Ph probe. they are like 10 bucks at a garden center or wal-mart.

it could be stress from the HID or a PH issue. its hard to tell with sprouts.

sveumy- The ph of the water shouldn't be an issue right? I mean its straight distilled water.

Pernicious- I know, I do need to get a Ph probe. I have a hard time finding anything garden-related
near me. I didn't think the ph of the soil would be a problem this early, but I will get on that.

I took them out from under the MH and put them on a window, 3 are starting to perk up.

A small note to remember, is some disstilled water has been known to have a ph as high as 8, but seeing how the plants seemed to perk up I don't think that's your issue.

But this very well could be the issue:  "11. How close are your lights to the plants?

8-10 inches".

That's a little close for seedlings, I'd start out about 18 to 24 inches above the plants until they have a chance to start feeding.

I second this.  way too close in my opinion.

Also, your soils pH might be off?  Need to get that tested.  For an approximate pH, test the run off when you water the soil with the distilled water.  This will suffice as an answer.

This is VERY important to know. the temp in your living room might be 76 or so, but directly underneath that light is going to be a completely different story.

A Temp/humidity meter at Lowes or Home Depot should be 10-15 bucks. The one I have has a 3' sensor that I place right at canopy level so I know just how hot it is for my girls...

This is more than likely this culprit, IMO. The light intensity was just too much for them at that young of a stage.
