if you're growing outdoors then the season and the sun will take care of light/light cycles. when growing indoors the aim is to make a recreation of the light periods but allows for a more controlled/hands-on method.
i guess more so you should study the process of how the plant grows and the different stages it undergoes before flowering.
if you're gonna grow indoors with a full set-up then you might as well start with cannabis.
