Do you think it would be best to use pots, or could I plant right in the ground, would the roots be able to compete with the bamboo?

Well if the bamboo is pretty thick then I'd go with pots.

bamboo is completely rhizo right?
if you dig into the ground, ESPECIALLY if youre using fertilizers, youll have bamboo tryna get all up in ya shit doggy
but seriously, if youre planting in bamboo keep to pots 3gal+. imo
