Need *low-maintenance* outdoor tips
    #539507 - 03/24/11 01:29 AM (13 years, 9 days ago)

Specifics:

First timer.
Feminized seeds, have pure sativa, indica, and hybrid varieties. Probably going with a hybrid, but may try more than one strain in different spaces.

No more than maybe 5-6 plants.
I can not visit this site easily- this must be as much of a fire-and-forget method as possible.

Near running water.
Heat zone 7.
Sandy natural soil composition.
Should get solid sun most all of the day.

Should I just sprout indoors and transplant? (and how long is ideal?)

I was thinking of flush-burying 5-gal buckets filled with your recommended soil mix, with many drilled holes on bottom and sides (for root expansion and drainage)

I have vermiculite and pearlite to help maximize water retention, but I'm just not going to be able to visit this place regularly.

Is there a specific, perhaps time-release fert mix I need?

As an alternative, is there some threshold where I could pour flowering optimized ferts during that stage?

Bottom line:
LOW-MAINTENANCE.

Having nursed several successful mushroom grows in the past, I know full well how delicacy, precision, and attention give the best results.
By nature, I'd much rather grow indoors and baby my babies to their brightest glory. But I don't have the option, and if I'm ever going to use these seeds, they'll have to be guerrilla/covert and un-maintained.

I think the location(s) are pretty damned good, with no expected traffic and a mile from anyone potentially interested- but that security only counts if I'm not going there but two or three times over the two-three months of grow.

I am not expecting best results- I just seek to maximize results based on minimum attention.

Please help-- it's grow time!

I am doing an outdoor grow aswell. My first one. I am in a heatzone of 3 or 4. I have started all of my plants now. I have transplanted a few outdoors while most are just on my window sill. only moved 4 out since its still pretty cold at times. Only and experiment

So as for nutes i would recommend not doing any time released, i've heard chemical nutes makes the smoke taste bad.

I am doing mine all natural. I dont care about how much i get, just want to see what a natural grow is like:)

in sandy soil that drains fast in full sun light your plants will be dead in 2 days of heat, use lots of peat moss to retain water and with that you want heavy mulch to stop your peat from drying out ,even with this you will have to make it out to water 1 time a week ,if you choose a grow spot with maybe 5 hours of sun a day you might stretch watering to every 10 days

Yes what DMT said, plus as far as nutrients I would recommend some good dry cow doo-doo mixed into the soil. This will give a good amount of continuous food for your season.  I would also be keeping in mind the critters that may eat your plants or even dig them up due to fresh new soil.

Very good thoughts-- very good, thank you. I hope animals don't eat them...

PS-- how small can they be and still handle the wild blue sky unattended?

And is 5-gal bucket best, or should I try bags of the soil placed in a hole?
I can imagine pros and cons... soil around here's salty.

with the buckets above ground they will dry out more easly ,all though i did 12 gallon bags that were fine but they were out of the sun ,anything over 14 '' animals tend to leave alone anything smaller you want to build cages for the plant to be safe~

use chicken wire and also bigger pots such as roots organic 707 soil (just open the bag and plant right in, comes in camo too!) . maybe some polymer crystals for water retention and everything else that was already said.

Yes, I was thinking about the polymer/gel stuff to help contain water...

What do you guys think about Global buckets as a method?
Seems pretty sharp to me... could this work here?

Looks like a DWC system almost. But basically just a pot with an extra deep run off reservoir.

So my four outdoor plants lasted a week efore animals
got to the sprouts. I have four more out that seemto be fine(I visit every week or so) and they have been out for may e two ish weeks? They seem to be doing alright. Still in the 30s at night and 40-50 during the day. They seem to be healthy and growing well other than the slow growing(expected cause of the cold. But yes I would recommend putting chicken wire around your grow. I am getting ready to transplant anotheR set of plants outside as they should be large enough to withstand the climate and harsh weather.

Thank you for the thoughts-- i will think about the chicken wire.

I believe I'm going to use the Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil with pearlite. Everyone seems to love it as a base.

Now I just have to decide on fertilizer... is it even necessary with that soil, or is there enough nutrient density in the soil itself to carry the plants all the way to harvest? I want to do the smart thing, within the limits of visitation I'm dealing with.

I like the double-bucket method simply because it seems to allow for extended time between watering.

Did you feed with bone, blood, or fish emulsion? Yeah that attracts raccons and coyote quick, they will dig them right up.
edit: Too early it the season and they stand out like a buffet to the deer.
