Testing PH
    #534024 - 03/06/11 08:02 PM (13 years, 26 days ago)

I'm new to the scientific side of horticulture. What are the best, and preferably most cost effective, ways to test the PH of your soil?

What about if your growing in a soil-less or nearly soil-less medium. What about testing the PH of the water that you give them? Would that be the case in a soil-less grow? If so how do you test the PH of the water?

you can buy a ph kit. iyou put some special drops in and it turns color to indicate the ph. although i highly reccommend a meter instead. its tough to compare to the chart and often times the meters are combination meters that tell you a plethora of information. they are priced at all different ranges but you probably get what you pay for.

pH drops are the cheapest and with a little work are not hard to read.

Pens are nice. Take the guessing out. My $70 Milwaukee was a price of shit. Got so you need to recalibrate it for each reading and then could not always be trusted.

Hmm. Continue with the idea's please. I'm just starting to get a feel for it. I have an old meter around somewhere that indicates a variety of things. But i'm not sure how well it works.

Could you get pH drops or strips or some other testing method at a local hardware store?

That sounds like a good idea. Rough idea for prices? I know it will vary place to place.

I prefer knowledge from people man. A library with 10 million books would never be able to do the same thing that a mentor can.

yea but for prices on something that common:

experience =< solid info :dumblol:

anyway...i got my cheap kit for about 8 USD

expect 70+ dollars for a monitor worth anything

test strips run anywhere from 5-15 dollars...usually depending on how many strips per pack and what all they test for

peace,

Drops range from 5 to 10 dallors.

Stay away from walmart pool drops. Not a very wide range of pH.They will do if thats all you can find.

If you're going the drops route, look out for the "pH control kit". Thats what I bought for $15...it came with drops and a bottle of pH up and pH down...you're gonna wanna adjust it, I promise.

Ok. And will these kits work for soil and water? Will water with fert in it have a different pH?

Sorry i'm all full of questions. I've always loved plants. But it's mainly just been a little outdoor hobby. Dropping some veggies in the ground and watching them grow. This is the first chance i've had to grow this plant that i love in an environment where i can actually care for it.
