Well the problem with gun ownership, like so many other things, lies in people being poorly educated on safety and operation of firearms.

you think that's the governments responsibility? to provide education on gun ownership? I often get tangled up in my head debating how far the role of government should extend into our lives.

It really is a struggle within myself as well. I think it should be the responsibility of the people, and yet we know how irresponsible people can be. I think perhaps it should be a requirement for someone shooting at a public range to at least make sure you understand the rules. Most ranges do this anyways.
We can only be sure of our own actions and hope they influence others.
