Danish Supreme Court deals blow to hippie enclave
    #528399 - 02/18/11 11:39 AM (5 years, 9 months ago)

Washington Post

Friday 18 Feb 2011
COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- The Danish Supreme Court has given the government the green light to take control of Christiania, a largely self-governing neighborhood that was occupied by hippies four decades ago.

The Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision from 2009, saying the roughly 900 residents have no irrevocable right to use the former naval base.

The decision means the government can go ahead with plans to "normalize" the neighborhood and tear down scores of ramshackle homes built without permits.

Residents say they will resist any attempts to evict them from the neighborhood, which has become a major draw for tourists curious about its counterculture lifestyle and liberal attitude toward soft drugs like cannabis.

There was a great televised program by travel-writer Rick Steves where he dedicates a segment of the show to his tour if Christiana.  Steves makes the point that the land is very valuable real-estate....The end could be seen coming.

Anyone here visited Christiana?

Yeah I've been there, crazy place to be, but so fucking cool. I was 13 back then and I had never smoked weed before but I was amazed by all the bongs and pipes and joint rolling booklet being sold there.
