Poetry, ya dig?

The Night Has A Thousand Eyes
Francis William Bourdillon

The night has a thousand eyes,
    And the day but one;
Yet the light of the bright world dies
    With the dying sun.

The mind has a thousand eyes,
    And the heart but one:
Yet the light of a whole life dies
    When love is done.

THE OPENING OF THE TRUNK
by Jim Morrison

Moment of inner freedom
when the mind is opened and the
infinite universe revealed
& the soul is left to wander
dazed & confus'd searching
here & there for teachers & friends.
:mushroom2:

Excerpt from The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
By William Blake

This will come to pass by an improvement of sensual enjoyment.
But first the notion that man has a body distinct from his soul is to be expunged; this I shall do, by printing in the infernal method, by corrosives, which in Hell are salutary and medicinal, melting apparent surfaces away, and displaying the infinite which was hid.
If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite.
For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narow chinks of his cavern.
:mushroom2:

From The Tibetan Book of The Dead
O, Alas! Alas! Fortunate Child of Buddha Nature,
Do not be oppressed by the force of ignorance and delusion!
But rise up now with resolve and courage!
Entranced by ignorance, from beginningless time until now,
You have had [more than] enough time to sleep.
So do not slumber any longer, but strive after virtue with body, speech and mind!

Are you oblivious to the suffering of birth, old age, sickness and death?
There is no guarantee that you will survive, even past this very day!
The time has come [for you] to develop perseverance in [your] practice.
For, at this singular opportunity, you could attain the everlasting bliss [of nirvana].
So now is [certainly] not the time to sit idly,
But, starting with [the reflection on] death, you should bring your practice to completion!

The moments of our life are nor expendable,
And the [possible] circumstances of death are beyond imagination.
If you do not achieve an undaunted confident security now,
What point is there in your being alive, O living creature?

All phenomena are [ultimately] selfless, empty, and free from conceptual elaboration.
In their dynamic they resemble an illusion, mirage, dream, or reflected image,
A celestial city, an echo, a reflection of the moon in water, a bubble, an optical illusion, or intangible emanation.
You should know that all things of cyclic existence and nirvana
Accord [in nature] with these ten similes of illusory phenomena.

All phenomena are naturally uncreated.
They neither abide nor cease, neither come nor go.
They are without objective referent, signless, ineffable, and free from thought.
The time has come for this truth to be realized!

Homage to the spiritual teachers!
Homage to the meditational deities!
Homage to the dakinis!
O, Alas! Alas! How needing of compassion are those living beings, tortured by their past actions,
[Who are drowning] in this deep chasm, the engulfing ocean of their past actions!
Such is the nature of fluctuating cyclic existence!
Grant your blessing, so that this ocean of sufferings may run dry!

How needing of compassion are those who are skill-less,
Those who are tortured by ignorance and past actions,
Those who indulge in actions conducive to suffering –
Even though they desire happiness!
Grant your blessing, so that the obscuration of dissonant mental states and past actions may be purified!

How needing of compassion are the ignorant and the deluded,
[Bound] in this confining dungeon of egotistical attachment and the subject-object dichotomy,
Who, like wild game, are trapped in this snare, time after time!
Grant your blessing, so that cyclic existence may be stirred to its depths!

How needing of compassion are those beings who endlessly revolve [in the cycle of existence],
As if [circling] perpetually [on] the rim of a water-wheel,
In this six-dimensional city of imprisoning past actions!
Grant your blessing, so that the womb entrances to the six classes of existence may be barred!

We who are fearless and hard–hearted, despite having seen so many sufferings of birth, old age, sickness and death,
Are wasting our human lives, endowed with freedom and opportunity, on the paths of distraction.
Grant your blessing, so that we may [continuously] remember impermanence and death!

Since we do not recognize that impermanent [things] are unreliable,
Still, even now, we remain attached, clinging to this cycle of existence.
Wishing for happiness, we pass our human lives in suffering.
Grant your blessing, so that attachment to cyclic existence may be reversed!

Our impermanent environment will be destroyed by fire and water,
The impermanent sentient beings within it will endure the severing of body and mind.
The season of the year: summer, winter, autumn and spring, themselves [exemplify] impermanence.
Grant your blessing, so that disillusionment [with conditioned existence] may arise from the depths [of our hearts]!

Last year, this year, the waxing and waning moons,
If we reflect carefully, we too are face to face with death.
Grant your blessing, so that we may become resolute in our practice!

Though this [body] endowed with freedom and opportunity is extremely hard to find,
When the Lord of Death approaches in the semblance of disease,
How needing of compassion are those who, bereft of the [sacred] teachings,
Return empty-handed [from this life]!
Grant your blessing so that [a recognition of] urgency may grow in our minds!

Alas! Alas! O Precious Jewel, embodiment of compassion!
Since you, the Conqueror, are endowed with a loving heart,
Grant your blessing, so that we and the six classes of beings
May be liberated, right now, from the sufferings of cyclic existence!

Morning
BILLY COLLINS

Why do we bother with the rest of the day,
the swale of the afternoon,
the sudden dip into evening,

then night with his notorious perfumes,
his many-pointed stars?

This is the best—
throwing off the light covers,
feet on the cold floor,
and buzzing around the house on espresso—

maybe a splash of water on the face,
a palmful of vitamins—
but mostly buzzing around the house on espresso,

dictionary and atlas open on the rug,
the typewriter waiting for the key of the head,
a cello on the radio,

and, if necessary, the windows—
trees fifty, a hundred years old
out there,
heavy clouds on the way
and the lawn steaming like a horse
in the early morning.

:coffee:

THE MASQUE OF RHYME

Adding my pee to the sea
of rhyme, it's time I admit sameness

is a bit of a hoax.
Yes, my body lies over social oceans

like yours and slightly like Rover's,
except he barks to speak and we

speak to bargain and intermingle. All's
translation in love and war. Do you

hear the joke about the marriage of
true mind to impediment after impediment?

That's what we call "language," at
least around here. What rhymes with "rhythm"?

"Mythic"? You have to squint to
hear it. Squint and scatter letters to

the five senses, shake off circumstance, and
find yourself in words: squatting amid

ashes while the wicked affluent legislators
dress for the ball. Your feet ache

and stink. The thought-track wakes and thinks:
novelty again, the same old novelty.

It's almost worse than royalty. My biographic
foot in the glass shoe -- fate

or déjà vu? The rhythm of
days produces chill, stupor, and after considerable

training, a bunch of personal pronouns.
It's Thursday, history's late as usual. Meanwhile,

some sort of sexual traffic jam
has been goading us all into public

revelation. Offstage, Fact slapped Value on the
butt, and said, Break a leg,

make a killing, show those suckers
where to suck. And Value answered, Don't

be vulgar, Fact, unless you're speaking personally.
As for me, where the bee

sucks, there suck I, a mean-er,
a be-er, an arriviste tooling down that

divided highway heading where none, they say,
ever returns. And when I don't

come back, say I told you
everything about yourself except the future, lie

alone in our bed of roses
whence, they say, poems arise, to amuse

the students when we've gone to prose.
I'd say more but you hear

those stuck horns blaring: that's been
my cue ever since I can remember.

To be able to understand this poem you will only need the knowledge of just the basic elements of poetry. You will not read it properly unless you read aloud.

Now a very great man once said
That some people rob you with a fountain pen.
It didn't take too long to find out
Just what he was talkin' about.
A lot of people don't have much food on their table,
But they got a lot of forks 'n' knives,
And they gotta cut somethin'.

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

~Edgar Allen Poe

Spiritual life is a life of search...but a true search.
Not to investigate and to seek what you hope to discover,
Not the object of your aspiration,
But what you are.
Meditation is just a search for the meditator.
Enlightenment is to discover...

To discover that there is no discoverer, and there is nothing to discover...
Enlightenment is to be.
To be the most wonderful discovery of what can not be found.
It is to arrive to no where...
To meet no one.
You fail, because of your habit to search only for that which satisfies your needs.

Get rid of all this need.
And you will see...
Get rid of all that you have.
And you will see...
Throw away all that can be thrown.
And you will see...
Give up these words, and what they make you feel
And you will see...
Give up your attempt to give up.
And you will see...
Give up your attempt to see.
Because then you will really see...
The farther the object you search for, the better eyesight you need.
That which is closest to you, you have to be.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
        If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
        And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
        And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
        If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

        --Rudyard Kipling

y gloria y paz y amor y venturanza
tu esplendor empañó niebla sombría;
solo un recuerdo al corazón quedó.
Y ahora melancólico me miras

mientras yo me prometía
que jamás se apagaría
para mí tu resplandor.

¿Quién aquel brillo radiante
¡oh lucero! te robó,
que oscureció tu semblante,
y a mi pecho arrebató
la dicha en aquel instante?

¿O acaso tú siempre así
brillaste y en mi ilusión
yo aquel esplendor te di
que amaba mi corazón,
lucero, cuando te vi?

Una mujer adoré
que imaginaría yo un cielo;
mi gloria en ella cifré,
y de un luminoso velo
en mi ilusión la adorné.

Y tú fuiste la aureola
que iluminaba su frente,
cual los aires arrebola
el fúlgido sol naciente,
y el puro azul tornasola.

Y astro de dicha y amores,
se deslizaba mi vida
a la luz de tus fulgores,
por fácil senda florida,
bajo un cielo de colores.

Tantas dulces alegrías,
tantos mágicos ensueños
¿dónde fueron?
Tan alegres fantasías,
deleites tan halagüeños,
¿qué se hicieron?

Huyeron con mi ilusión
para nunca más tornar,
y pasaron,
y solo en mi corazón
recuerdos, llanto y pesar
¡ay! dejaron.

¡Ah lucero! tú perdiste
también tu puro fulgor,
y lloraste;
también como yo sufriste,
y el crudo arpón del dolor
¡ay! probaste.

¡Infeliz! ¿por qué volví
de mis sueños de ventura
para hallar
luto y tinieblas en ti,
y lágrimas de amargura
que enjugar?

Pero tú conmigo lloras,
que eres el ángel caído
del dolor,
y piedad llorando imploras,
y recuerdas tu perdido
resplandor.

Lucero, si mi quebranto
oyes, y sufres cual yo,
¡ay! juntemos
nuestras quejas, nuestro llanto:
pues nuestra gloria pasó,
juntos lloremos.

Mas hoy miro tu luz casi apagada,
y un vago padecer mi pecho siente:
que está mi alma de sufrir cansada,
seca ya de las lágrimas la fuente.

¡Quién sabe!… tú recobrarás acaso
otra vez tu pasado resplandor,
a ti tal vez te anunciará tu ocaso
un oriente más puro que el del sol.

A mí tan sólo penas y amargura
me quedan en el valle de la vida;

Here's a nice poem I just found

~Words of Thought for a Better Life~

Always remember to love yourself,
for the person that you are,
put all doubts and fears upon the shelf,
and from them you'll go far.
Seek out positive people for friends,
that you enjoy to be around,
for true bonds of friendship never ends,
once it has been found.

Learn to forgive yourself,
as well as friend and foe,
mistakes we make is how we learn,
and from them we can grow.

Always pursue happiness,
but never lose touch from Base,
the pursuit you'll find, is a state of mind,
and may be a life long chase.

Where You come from
is not that Important,
what matters is always knowing,
the past is gone, the future is now,
and the future is where you'll be going.

Always try and keep your word,
try not to ever lie,
dont repeat bad things you've heard,
Karma comes back by.

If you worry about what might be,
and wonder what might have been,
You'll blind the thoughts that help you see
what is...and where to begin

Take or make time for a sunset,
or perhaps a walk on the beach,
Peace of mind, you'll often find,
is always quite within reach.

Always be strong and face your fear,
if you want that fear to disappear,
For if You turn and run away,
that fear within you is there to stay...
and before you bed down each night remember to say:
" LIFE LOVES ME AND I LOVE LIFE,
TOMORROWS GOING TO BE
A FANTASTIC DAY!"

and came away contented.

In the days of our youth
Our futures were at our fingertips.
Our knowledge and experience were limited
Though we were unaware at the time.

Where we are now, is, for the most part
of our own doing.
Good or bad places they may be
Our goals should still shine like bright stars in the night sky.

Keep your hopes and dreams
Close to your heart and mind.
As they'll only blow away in the wind
If you let them go.

No matter your years
Keep the youthful exuberance of the child.
And you won't find sadness
But happiness and something to strive for.

What you think dudes?  I haven't written a poem since like 7th grade English class
