The answer is both: goal and byproduct. Unless you have everything you need in life already at your disposal, you will need money. Always having a need for money, keeps it on your mind.
Working all the time just to make money so you can pay the bills to get by (and working in general), you like to buy something you enjoy (brings happiness, fulfillment) with the money you've earned. Working nonstop just to pay for the essentials isn't enough for the majority of people. Material things are useless in life since you don't take any of those things with you when you die, but you like to have nice things and enjoy your time while you're here.

Both. Its a goal of mine to not have any financial trouble like my family has had (a huge reason to me seeking an education, and why I'm still loan free just now ending my third year of college).
But I don't really care about having a ton of money, I just want enough to feel comfortable. I just so happen will most likely end up with an excess amount of money because of how much I make my money last. I'm pretty much intent on donating to various charities (mostly things like the heifer project) because I understand what its like to need charity and how many people are in a lot shittier situations than I ever have been in.
I think of spoiling myself only when I have a huge amount of extra money, like when I splurged on my new laptop and tv when I had a ton of extra money because I can enjoy both of those far into the future.
