drugs and our brain
    #492864 -

So I was reading "What The Bleep Do We Know?" and was on the chapter about addiction. I was a little bit P.O'd about some of the stuff they said about drugs, but parts of the chapter where good and talked about emotion addiction.
Well, anyway- in one part it talked about how heroin addicts produce a lot less endogenous endorphins. I knew this, but then they went on and basically said that it is the same for all drugs, that every drug has an endogenous equal. For a second I was thinking- wait... I wonder if people who smoke lots of weed produce less endogenous cannabinoids. Then my brain turned on I realized that's bullshit. We don't produce endogenous LSD, we produce serotonin and LSD attaches to the serotonin molecule. With cannabinoids and opiates they have similar chemicals but not all drugs have equals they just have receptors. We all have certain receptors that act certain ways but the brain and drugs are complex systems. Well anyways I was just wondering what your thoughts are on all that and if you have any interesting information.

LSD does not "attach" to the serotonin molecule.  It simply gets accepted  into the same receptors that serotonin does.

And yes if you body gets used to external products creating certain chemicals in the brain, then your brain will stop/slow production of said chemicals naturally.

Not everything is as it seems.

I believe lsd is a sacrament which can open up to other dimensions and other awesome stuff, this is not produced by a thing such as chemicals in your brain.

Silence speaks in many codes.

(also I hate arguing for some reason, but here I am.)

:ilold:

Pseudo science aside, not every drug uses this action on the brain where it has a specific site of receptors.  As tangs pointed out lsd does not have a specific chemical dedicated to it but rather takes advantage of it's specific use of the serotonin pathway.  Marijuana on the other hand makes use of the neurotransmitter, among others such as dopamine, but at an indirect level, mimicking the endogenous cannabinoid anandamide.

Is there any research between habitual marijuana use and a decline in naturally produced anandamide?

I am searching google scholar but I cannot find much specifically...maybe if I search more.  I forget how to sign in and access my school databases.

But heavy marijuana use does lead to decreased dopamine activity after stopping.  Not irreversible though.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
