Help me wire my 400w ballast to my fixture, please!
    #486512 - 10/09/10 07:55 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hey everyone, I could REALLY use your help with this, I don't wanna fuck it up at all. So I gutted this old fixture
(I know its raggedy, but it's all ive got to mount this new 400w ballast in:
.
I also have this power cord:
.

This is how I plan on doing it, please correct me if I'm wrong! There were 4 wires (I'm assuming for power) labeled 277v(black), 240v(tan), 206v(purple), and 120v(orange). I capped off all but the 120v since my wall outlet uses 120v. That leaves 4 wires exposed:
.
1 Red wire that goes to the light socket, 1 white COMMON wire that goes to the socket, 1 white COMMON wire that goes to the wall outlet, and the orange 120v wire that goes to the wall outlet. Is there supposed to be a ground, or can I just ground it from my power cord to ground it to the metal in the fixture? And how do I know which to connect the 120v/COM wire to? (+ or -? e.g. white or black). It would be better for me if I go with an ungrounded setup. Is that possible, just not safe?

This is the schematics that came with the ballast if it helps:
.
Someone pleeeeeease help me out here, it's my first go at this and I dont wanna do it wrong! Thanks in advance!! =)

Yeah, it's safe, it's just an old fixture. The ballast, resistor, ignitor and ALL of the wiring is brand new and I'm building a frame to mount it to from chains and putting about 4 small fans in the space, plus intake/output ventilation. I just wanna get the wiring right so it doesn't start any electrical fires. or burn up the first time I fire it up (No pun intended lol).

Yeah, they usually are here too, but if it's the 277v that I capped. I'm wondering if it's like a car, and you can ground to anything metal on the frame? Well, thanks your your input bub, I'll wait for hopefully someone with some experience.

Com goes to the white wire in the power cord, the 120v line goes to the black line, and the green or bare wire in the cord will go to anywhere metal in case. The rest of the wiring may be labeled  differently depending on the ballast make and you should go my the schematic for it. House wiring is completely different from automotive wiring. Black is hot (+), white is neutral (-), and green or bare is the earth ground.

I just wired it all up, bolted the components down, hooked up the power cord (with the ground, thanks again lol), installed the light, and gave her a test run. It works awesome, so thank you again for the good advice Amnesiac! Is there any way I can give u cred/return a favor online? This is how it all worked out:
