 About wiring an HPS

About five years ago I was told that the cable connecting on one side the ignitor and the ballast and on the other the hps (or mh) lamp should not exceed some length, something like one or two meters maximum.
Can you tell me if there is such a thing, what's the limit and everything else you think is relevant?

I found this pic yesterday when searching google for the same question 
Thanks for the quick answer. I'll go rewire in a few hours to get the ballast and igniter away.
