It's raining ashes on my house and I can barely breathe
    #473449 - 09/07/10 08:03 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

You guys remember all those pictures I've posted about the mountains west of my house?

Here's what it looks like today;

Slightly more intense, apparently about another 750 acres burned overnight so we're at nearly 4,000 total burned so far. They're saying we might get evacuated later this evening if they can't fight it down better

I hope you and yours are okay Harry. Careful with the breathing of that stuff, with you sports and activity's that stuff will mess up your lungs. I hope you are using a mask outside. Do you have your house sealed up as much as possible? I hope they get it under control soon. You and yours are in our thoughts my friend. That video looks like how it looks when a volcanoe spews ash. Keep safe

Damn, 3000 acres is a pretty huge fire. Hopefully all of my friends in the Haystack area are alright. I'm gonna call them now. At least you aren't in the mountains where that's going on, Harry.

That looks crazy.

That sucks man, I am in the interior of British Columbia and I was evacuated last year, and almost again this year... so I can totally feel for you.

Heres hoping things turn out well.

Haystack is a long ways away from this so they should be good although the air out there isn't too good right now.

Depends on if the winds keep up from the same direction at this speed. Fire almost never burns downhill so we're safe, but we're getting 45mph downslope winds right now so it's a very unusually high probability right now :sad:

Wouldn't be the first time I've been evac'd for a forest fire.

yeah, that video doesn't really do a good job of demonstrating how serious it is. I'm WAY closer to the mountains than she is in that shot, so the smoke literally covers like 80% of the sky from where I am. This morning it seemed like it was foggy except for the disgusting smell.

Oh, and now we're up to 8,000 acres

What do they do about fires like this?
Do they just let it burn out?
Is they anything they do to contain it/ prevent it from spreading?

oh yeah they do a fuck ton. Last time they let a fire burn itself out it took out over 2.5million acres in yellowstone in 1988. We have 150 firefighters on the ground digging firelines and cutting down trees ahead of the blaze to reduce the fuel load. Also about 15 tanker planes and helicopters dropping slurry and water on it from the air as well as around 50 standard firetrucks on the ground spraying water.

I've been watching C-130's fly over my house all day dropping this shit;

We're just lucky we have an airforce and an army base in this state so we have access to the huge planes instead of the small ones in those pictures.

Hope everything goes well Harry, if they tell you to evacuate then get your shit and go. Last year was a huge black spot in Australian history with the Victorian bushfires, people were unprepared and uninformed of the risk of staying, so lots of people either died, luckily I wasn't even near it.

But once again, hope all is well, and that the fire is handled before it gets too close

I think Im far enough away from boulder that I won't be effected, but you can sure smell it. Smells like a camp fire and is a little foggy here from the fires. The winds sure havn't ben helping.

Sorry to hear about the fire. That's horrible. At least 8000 acres is a lot better than 2.5 million acres. It's hard to even imagine that sort of damage. Was the 2.5 million in 1988 all forest?

Jeez. You know, I almost made it as ground crew for a wildfire fighting company in Oregon last month. The only reason I didn't make it was because I smoke too many cigarettes, and I failed the pack test (a 3 mile walk with 45 pounds on your chest in 45 minutes).

If it weren't for that, I might possibly be fighting a fire right now instead of working on these beautiful babies we've got!

Good luck you guys! I hope everyone stays safe, and no one looses anything un-replaceable.
