How they looking??? Little yellowing, little curling.
    #464665 - 08/21/10 06:47 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

What does everyone think?  There is a bit of light yellowish fade going on, as well as come upward curling.  They're still pretty young. bout 4 weeks (heat was an issue that I have since corrected, that is why they are a little small for their age).

Comments?  Helpful tips???

Water em every morning.  Wanna say about a half gallon between the two, not too much I thought.  Look like too much water?

Theyre just in veg so as far as N-deficiency goes.  Is there anything I could do at their current size?  And is that conclusive?

Your over watering like a mother. All the plants that Ive seen or had that have been 4 weeks have never been like that due to a N Deficiency, Usually there more green. Just don't see a N deficiency coming on so quick like that.....

But def over watering I water my plant in A 3 gallon pot Once a week not even a half gallon either way less.

First just let your soil dry out for a bout a week. Don't let it get bone dry(doubt it will in a week anyway). But just stick your finger in it in 2 days and if its still moist or just a darker color then the top leave it. But after it heals up i'd say feed it something. Something for veg.

K, I'll give it a go letting them dry out a bit.

So you recommend seriously only maybe 1x per week watering (how much per plant, per watering then?) for how long.  How many weeks into veg do you increase the flow?

Just water it once every 5 days or when the soil is pretty dry. But i guarantee you if you let it dry out 5 days from now it will still be real moist if you did down a little bit in the soil. and just give it enough water. don't drown it.

I have a plant about a few weeks ahead of you and I only water about once a week and sometimes in between all that Ill mist the soil to moisten it up but that's not the watering part. I just do that when the top inch is dry(just a light mist)

There is no absolute rule when it comes to watering.  As your plant ages, it will be putting on more root and leaf mass.  This in turn will cause it to suck up more water through its roots, and transpire more water into the atmosphere through its leaves.  When a plant is as small as yours are, it is not going to need a lot of water because it simply doesn't have the biological infrastructure to deal with a lot of water.

At each watering, I would suggest watering only as much as will allow a small amount of water to seep out the drain holes in the bottom of your container.  Start your watering with 2 - 3 cups and let that soak in for five minutes before adding more.  Then slowly add more water until you are assured that the container has been fully moistened by water running out the bottom.

Note: If you pour your water in all at once and the soil has dried out a bit, the water may have a tendency to create pathways through the dry soil that will cause it to rush to the bottom before it has fully watered all of the soil in your container.  This is why I suggest watering a little bit first and letting that soak in, priming the soil so to speak.  It will also help, if you notice the top layer of your soil hardening/cracking/pulling away from the sides of the container, to lightly rake it with your fingers or a fork in order to break up any hard mass that has formed on the surface layer.  Just do your best not to damage surface root structure when you do!

In summary, a seedling like yours will probably only need to be watered every few days at most.  But as it ages (and dependent upon environmental factors such as relative humidity, wind and temperature), the plants will require significantly more.  If you can easily lift your containers, do it - a dry container is much lighter than a wet one!  Likewise, you can also dig your finger an inch or two into the soil to gauge how dry it is becoming.  An inexpensive moisture meter from your local garden store would be a no brainer.  You're going to have to get in tune with your plants needs, and we welcome you to ask as many questions as you may have here on the Growery.  We'll do our best to help you along the way in avoiding too many rookie mistakes!
