understanding pruning
    #462516 - 08/17/10 10:57 PM (6 years, 3 months ago)

when is enough enough?
do to security reasons my outdoor monsters had to go inside
they were LST and all ready had a pretty even canopy.
There were dozens of branches down "to low" that i have taken off allready
At least 50 cuttings from each plant to help the rest of the colas..
+1 month more of veg time
both packed in a 6'x4' space

-would continuing taking of inferior branches(smaller diameter or in the shade greatly effect the quality of the remaining buds?
i might have chopped off 1/3 of the plant already but its still much larger then in that old pic of them

also
not that i am going to but lets say yield was not an issue
all you want is the best bud possible
Would reducing the plant 50%  greatly help the remaining branches
i know more stems means more bud but smaller and"Pruning away the underbrush and smaller branches focuses the plant's energy on the remaining buds, which grow large and bulky with fewer leaves"

what is the point where enough is enough

Um, I would think that there's a whole lot of other threads on this subject already... Try looking at the other threads, and see what you can find there.

I would think that you could prune some more of the branches that don't in fact have buds on them, or even trim a few of the fans off to direct the growth to the buds.  I'm in no way an expert on it, but that seems it would make sense to me .

Personally I would just supercrop.

I like to take any leaves that are mostly discolored and after a few week or two of flowering I'm pretty liberal about snipping a fan leaf or two if they're blocking the light to a good sized bud site.

In a trained situation like you've got I'm usually pretty ruthless about trimming under the canopy too.

well the branches have been supercroped already, when i was trying to keep them in my scrog
at this point i dont see how it could help.
do you mean crop them in, like fold them toward the light?

NizzyJones im am not really talking about leaves, but thanks for your input.

If you supercrop the tall ones they will stop growing for a week and the shorter ones could catch up.  You could achieve a more even canopy if you did that a couple times (you can do this while they are flowering).  You should ask Inverted but I'm pretty sure the ones that you break and then repair themselves actually get bigger than they would otherwise have (but not as tall maybe).

Er yeah, I didn't make that real clear. I should say I did trim out the branches below the canopy but that was also in a scrog that was running out of space.

what your saying sounds great but if you could see my setup you would understand thats not the problem.
does anyone had any answers to my original questions?
plus, i have supper cropped some branches twice all ready along with weighted hooks, i dont know how much more stress they can take

i have a canopy of 12-14"'s colas
and then i still have a bunch of small shoots and branches under that

Cutting off the small branches in the shade will improve the quality of the buds on the top, as well as the overall quality because buds on the bottom tend to be less dense and ripe at the time of harvest.  To what degree all that happens I cannot tell you.  I personally left all my "popcorn nugs" on my plants, but if you look at Inverted's most recent grow he trimmed his off.

so are you suggesting to just remove popcorn nugs when they form instead of removing the branches they will form on?

No remove the whole branch before your plants wastes energy and nutes making a bud.

If you're doing a scrog then there should be NOTHING under the screen. Remove every single bud and fanleaf that's below the screen to maximize the yield of the buds that are actually getting light.

If you combine training and topping with some nice under-canopy pruning you can really maximize yields. Even without a screen my plants look like this;

that way the canopy is nice and even but none of the areas that aren't receiving light are wasting energy trying to produce buds

okay.
so i shouldn't worry that i took off 50+ branches/arms already.
i should just keep going.

i was just worried about hermies
and i have chopped so much i just wanted people to reassure me that i was helping, not just loosing arms.

everyone of those colas you see in the first post shot up 12 inches and put out at least 12 arms.
