Add zeros to your bottom line with Zero Water!
    #455318 - 08/05/10 03:51 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Yeah, I know the water is fine.  But it's what comes with the water that will save you time, money and heartache.  A very sensitive TDS meter that is 7X's move accurate than my old EC meter.  Clones should read = or < 700 ppm, Veg should read = or < 1400 ppm, Bloom = or < 2100 ppm.  This corresponds to an EC of 1, 2, and 3.  After 3 weeks in bloom, the ppm should be ramped back to 1400 for 2weeks and 1200 for 1 week and the last week 700 ppm or pure water.  Using Miracle Grow quick start, it works out to be about 1.2oz/gal = 1400ppm, and 1.8oz/gal = 2100ppm

When mixed properly, expect yields of .5g/watt every 30 days.

he's probably talking about zero water, the new brita style water filter thing that comes with a free TDS meter.

the meter is a great extra but the filter itself, assuming you have crappy water, needs to be replaced constantly, and you can only make a gallon or so at a time.

Most of the problems that I have encountered over the past 3 decades have been with nute problems.  If you went to the Doctor, they would run some tests.  For the astute grower, they will employ the I.H.D. (improvised horticultural device) principle, using whatever they have readily available.  But what I'm really saying is this, don't make the same mistakes that I and others have made in the past.  Money saved is money earned.  And as a bonus, the filter works really well too.

the reason you're having nute problems isn't because you had a cheap TDS meter, it's because you're using Miracle Grow :nonono:

Actually the nute problems occurred with dyna-grow.  Switched to MG and saved the plants.  tsp on the label for dyna-grow means tablespoon not teaspoon.  Now I am just using the dyna to foiler feed and that will get the micro-nutes delivered.  But thanks for the concern.  High times did a test a few years back and MG did quite well.  My tomatoes have always been great and hugh.  And you can pick it up at any major outlet for home supplies.  I would bump it back to 1oz/gal veg and 1.6oz/gal bloom to keep it in desired range if using the liquid quick start miracle grow.

but why bloom with quick start miracle grow? if you're going to be using bottom of the line ferts, at least use the one they design for blooming, don't try to flower with their nutes intended for seeds and cuttings.

It has an N-P-K of 4-12-4 and is in liquid form, which is great for measuring.  MG will hit the benchmark of .5 g/watt every 30 days no problem.  Quick start is just the name they give this mix of fertilizers, its the ratio that is important.  Also ensures that the plants wont get to be over 5 feet tall which can be a concern with some varieties.

the height of the plants is completely controlled by you. Flower early and they'll stay small. Similarly, I'd bet you $1000 I can grow a plant over 5 feet tall with any fert by just not flowering it. Eventually it's going to get there no matter what.

Secondly, the NPK ratio is absolutely not the only important thing about fertilizers. SO much more goes into producing a proper nutrient than just the ratio of those three macronutrients. I suggest you do some reading on micronutrients, enzymes, chelation, soil microbiota and fulvic and humic acids.

And lastly, assuming the NPK ratio is your only criteria for shopping; why use 4-12-4? 12 is WAY too much phosphorus IMO

I'm not actually, no. I use it because I bought the bag once and it's enough for a 10 year supply, but I'm just waiting to try big bud and overdrive this round

yah, tell me about it, I don't think I'll need to buy any more of the dry stuff for years upon years.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that K was more important than P during flowering, but I just formatted my PC and forgot to backup my damn bookmarks :frown:

you definitely did read that, it's a major part of the reason things like big bud (0-15-40) are becoming so popular and leading to such monstrous yields.

Diesel, I can see by your pic that you have some nute problems.  But since you can't seem to read, let me be as plain as I can.  Less than 700 total for clones.  My water is fine,  I got the zero water for the TDS meter.  It is an EC of less than 1.0, veg should be a little less than 2.0 and for the first 3 weeks in bloom should be less than 3.0 and then ramped back down to 2.2 or so.  The avg. ppm according to Jorge C. is 1300 ppm (700-2000ppm)

lets think of it as he bought a $40 TDS meter, and it came with a free water filter.
